Learn how to "make pictures instead of just taking pictures" with professional photographer John Blaustein, author of The Hidden Canyon, a River Journey and a 2016 Authors Dinner honoree.

Blaustein, who has traveled the world for numerous corporations and whose clients include businesses, individuals, non profits and publications, has opened his North Berkeley home for a three hour workshop for six participants only. Featuring a hands-on review of what you need to know about your camera to achieve the maximum image quality, the discussion will be geared towards getting the most out of your digital camera, with an emphasis on practical tips for better images. Before the day ends, you'll even be able to practice your actual photos and discussing the process and results.


Walking Tour & Lunch at Berkeley City Club

Join local historian and popular walking tour leader  Trish Hawthorne to explore Berkeley's
 "Julia Morgan Park, " a neighborhood filled with the famed architect's work. Start you
r morning with coffee in a Morgan-designed Arts and Crafts house. Then stroll through nearby streets, seeing and learning about the handsome brown shingle homes Morgan designed in the first decade of the 20th century. 

The tour concludes with lunch at the Berkeley City Club, a Julia Morgan masterpiece. There will be time to explore the building and to discuss the full scope of Morgan's work and prolific career.

Take a walk on the wild side with a
Quirky Berkeley tour lead by
Tom Dalzell, walker of all two hundred miles of Berkeley's streets and founder of Quirky Berkeley, a "love letter to Berkeley." Working from a specially crafted itinerary, Dalzell will lead participants through some of Berkeley's strangest front yards, helping you see Berkeley in a whole new (and strange) light. 

The tour will begin and end at Live Oak Park. From there the group will wind through the hills, passing an epic peace sign, an elegant topiary giraffe, giant ceramic creatures and many other curiosities, including the micro quirk along Spruce Street. 
 
Enjoy an intimate conversation with two of the Bay Area's liveliest and most interesting personalities!

Jon Carroll, S.F. Chronicle  reporter from 1962-2015, with stints at Rolling Stone, the Village Voice and elsewhere in between, made readers laugh, cry and think in his 8,700  columns for the paper. Tracy Johnston was a freelance writer and magazine  editor, publishing feature stories in national magazines as well as a gripping adventure travel  book, Shooting the Boh,    about a river trip gone wrong.

Chroniclers of the Grateful Dead,  Peter Richardson and David Gans join forces to bring the Grateful Dead alive for this fifty person gathering at Shattuck Avenue Spats, a Jerry Garcia hang out in the 1970's. 

Professor and author Peter Richardson along with author, journalist, broadcaster and musician David Gans are recognized as trusted voices of the Grateful Dead. Together they will share perspectives on the Grateful Dead and the social milieu which shaped and was shaped by America's top touring band of the second half of 20th century.

He is chairman of Common Cause and co-creator of the award-winning documentary Inequality for All, shown in Meyer Sound's Pearson Theater as a library benefit in 2014.
