Legal Aid's Technology Initiative Grants from LSC helps launch new initiatives

Legal Aid received two grants from the Legal Services Corporation's Technology Intiative Grant program that will be aimed at improving the delivery of legal services to low income populations through the use of technology. The grants will help launch both the Hawaii Legal Services Portal project and the Mobile Usability Study. The Hawaii Legal Services Portal will direct people to the appropriate resource based on their legal needs by providing a central location for self-represented litigants to access legal information from various organizations. Legal Aid is also partnering with Pro Bono Net to perform a Mobile Usability Study focused on identifying the best approaches for mobile usability of online interviews to help self-represented litigants with their court forms.

Elise Von Dohlen, Sergio Alcubilla, and Angela Lovitt represented Legal Aid at the recent  LSC Technology Initiative Grant Conference in San Antonio, Texas. The conference is the only national event focused exclusively on the use of technology in the legal aid community. Elise and Sergio were part of a panel presentation on "Collaborating with your Courts on E-filing, Document Assembly and Access for Low Income People" and shared about Hawaii's success in working with community partners to help improve access to justice.

A new "legal incubator" has been launched by the UH Law School, in partnership with the Legal Aid Society and Volunteer Legal Services Hawai'i, to help recent graduates and other lawyers who seek to support themselves while they offer low-cost or free legal services to clients with limited resources.

The legal incubator project - tentatively named Hawai'i Emerging Legal Practitioners or HELP - began training this month with the first cohort of lawyers interested in developing solo or small-firm practices who also are committed to providing access to legal services for low- and moderate-income residents.

HELP will provide stipends and mentoring to speed the development of startup firms for the many people with legal needs who otherwise would not have access to justice, but who need assistance with reduced fees in areas such as family law, trusts and estates, bankruptcy, and veterans' assistance.
Honolulu Access to Justice Room needs volunteers for February

Thank to the law firm of Ayabe, Chong, Nishimoto, Sia & Nakamura, LLLP for
adopting the month of January to volunteer!

The Honolulu District Court Access to Justice Room is a joint effort of the Judiciary, the Hawaii Access to Justice Commission, the Hawaii State Bar Association, and the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii to increase access to justice for self-represented litigants at the state District Court.

Volunteer attorneys are needed in February to provide legal advice through short-term limited legal services and help self-represented litigants better understand the court process and the law, which may apply to their case.    The hours of  the Access to Justice Room are:   Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays weekly, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Training for attorneys wishing to volunteer will be held at the HSBA.  Please contact Brian Simon at the HSBA office at 808-792-7347 for training dates.  If you've completed training, you can Click here to sign up.

(Volunteer attorneys provide limited legal assistance to self-represented litigants with legal advice on civil matters related to landlord-tenant cases, collection cases, and temporary restraining order cases which involve non-family members or parties who are not now, or have not been in a dating relationship.)
