News from the Board
Are you interested in running for the  Board  of Trustees?

As you may already know,  Board elections are held each May, and in May 2016 there will be three seats to fill. Two of these seats are for a 3 (three) year terms and the other, normally reserved for ex-patriot parents, is a two-year term. People interested in running for the  Board must have had experience in PASB's governance structure, specifically by serving on a  Board Committee, and all Board members must be able to speak and understand written and spoken English.

News from the Business Office
The payment of fees on the correct due date is very important for the financial health of the school. We would like to remind all of the actions taken for the non payment of fees on the due dates as per Admin Policy 2230 and Association Contract signed every year for re-enrollment:

2230  NONPAYMENT OF FEES

Parents who are delinquent in making payments will receive up to three written notices that describe the course of action the School will employ in the event that overdue payments are not made. These include:
  1. Twenty-Day Payment Overdue Notice: This notice informs the family that payment of tuition is 20 days overdue and asks the family to contact the Business Manager.
  2. Forty-Day Payment Overdue Notice: This notice informs the family payment of tuition is 40 days overdue and gives them a deadline in order to avoid the account being turned  over to a collection agency.
  3. Sixty-Day Payment Overdue Notice: This notice informs the family payment of tuition  is 60 days overdue and gives them a deadline in order to avoid the account being turned  over to a collection agency. The debt will be sent to the "Cartório" and the name of the person responsible will be listed on the national bad credit list.
  4. If none of these measures succeed, legal measures will be pursued immediately.
News from the Admissions and Outreach Office
As you may know, Thelma Filizola, our School Registrar for the past  38 years, closed out her career here at PASB on December, 2015.

She had been a special part of our community for almost four decades, truly a lifetime of love for children and dedication to the school. Students and teachers come and go in American International Schools. Staff, coordinators, principals and superintendents come and go. But every community has a core of sincere, dedicated people who remain across that turnover and make up the bedrock of everything for which that school stands.  Thelma has been one of those people, and all of us here at PASB wish her all happiness!

ENEM

The grades for last ENEM (High School National Exam) have been published and we are all anxious to know the results of the seniors who took the test. However, this year, not all grades were made available. INEP (Anísio Teixeira National Institute of Studies and Research) had informed that candidates who are just practicing would only have access to their grades on March 8th. Students under 18 old who did not finish High School in 2015 are considered practicing candidates. For this reason, most of our students did not have access to the grades, since they will only graduate in June/2016. Only two of our students actually had their results because they are 18 and they chose to use the exam as their High School Certificate.

Therefore, we will have to wait to have all the grades and be able to analyze our students performance on this national examination. We know, however, that our school is not going to be included in the National Ranking of best school based on ENEM results simply because of our calendar.

The Brazilian Program Coordinatior, Ms. Bianca Begrow, is available to answer any doubts that might arise regarding this topic.
Secondary School News
  • Welcome Back! It is great to see all of the Secondary students happy to be back and refreshed to start Quarter 3 and Semester 2! We look forward to a second half of the year filled with continued academic growth and the building of a stronger and more positive sense of community among our students and staff.
  • Academic Advisory and Assistance Program (AAAP), Recuperação and Academic Probation: We are very pleased to see a large reduction in the number of students qualifying for the AAAP program this quarter:
    • Middle School: ↓ 32%
    • High School: ↓ 41%

We aim to further reduce this by another 20% for Quarter 4 AAAP. For those students who do qualify for AAAP, Recuperação and Academic Probation, parents will be notified via email, including a schedule for the mandatory support. AAAP Support and Recuperação will begin Tuesday, January 26th.

  • After School Athletics Programs: Tryouts were held this week for various sports. Practices for our soccer, basketball, volleyball, futsal and swimming teams will resume next week.
  • Attendance Reminders: Quarter 3 is filled with many interruptions, including the fast approaching Carnaval break. Extended long weekends/holidays are considered unapproved absences and any missing assissments cannot be made up. Please see the Parent Student Handbook.
