FROM THE IBM RING 199 PRESIDENT-ELECT

Dear Magic Peers,

As 2014 comes to an end I look back on the year as a year of transition. Mid-year we had interim officers elected when Tom and Pam Beaman unfortunately had to step down for personal reasons. Scott Shelton assumed the role of President, Fred Quick as Secretary, and I filled the Vice President position. A new Executive Committee was formed and met monthly to create a plan for 2015 and beyond. Ring 199 and its members got a lot of fresh ink in the Linking Ring magazine (thanks to Fred Quick), we adopted a new room layout for the meetings, and in December we changed the meeting format to make it more member interactive.

In May of 2015 we will celebrate our 45th anniversary! Forty-Five years of promoting magic in the Raleigh area. We all stand on the shoulders of giants who founded and led Ring 199 over those years and as we move forward we will continue to embrace what they have taught us and build upon it to create a new legacy for the next 45 years.

Times have changed and so must we. Magic enthusiasts have evolved into a new breed. How magic is learned/passed down is certainly new due to today's technology. Just to keep up we must change our ways. But, to lead we must change our thinking.

We have adopted the Fun, Friendly and Informative philosophy with you, the member, at the core. We are trying to create greater value for current members as we seek to attract new members.

We have raised the yearly dues to $25.00; the first increase in over 15 years. With this increase comes changes that will provide more value for you, our members.

One of the changes you can look forward to is the new starting time of 7:15 PM. While this may not seem like a positive change, it allows enough time for the youth group meeting to conclude and for us to transition into the adult meeting. We have decided to charter Magic Youth Raleigh as an independent youth club. Youth members may not attend Ring 199 meetings or mid-month workshops. They may still attend Ring lectures, auctions, and certain social events as invited guests. Youth members may apply for Ring #199 membership at the age of 13 years.

Starting at 7:15 also allows us 15 minutes to reset the room and to put out the food and beverages. That's right! Food and beverages! We will provide food and beverages at all the regular meetings for members and guests. Not just chips and dip but pizza or sandwiches and beverages. A value added member benefit.

There will be more lectures than ever before covering more topics to satisfy all of our member's interests. Close-up, Mentalism, Gospel, Kids, Stand-up, Bizarre/Story Telling, Acting, the Business of Magic, Creativity, etc. So far for 2015 we have four lectures lined up: one in each of the first four months of the year. Christopher Taylor's Mentalism in January, Barry Mitchell's Gospel and Kids magic in February, Diamond Jim Taylor's Close-up and Gambling magic in March, and Hannibal's Story Telling magic in April. Not bad for the first four months of the year! See the website for complete details for each lecturer.

Ring 199 Adult Members in good standing will receive two tickets to attend two lectures of their choice at no charge during 2015. Another value added member benefit. Normal lecture fees are increasing to $15 for adult members and $30 for non-members.

The new monthly meeting format will include a 20 minute Mini Lecture, Product Reviews (Book, DVD or Trick), member Theme performances, and social time for members to get together to discuss what's on their minds. We rolled out this new format in December and received several e-mails from members supporting the change and look forward to more.

To increase member performances, we have added a participation raffle for performers. Those who preform will receive one raffle ticket for each month's performance. At the end of each quarter (4 per year) we will host a drawing for three cash prizes, one $25 and two $10. Another value added member benefit.

I can go on and on, but there is one more thing I want to share with you. While nothing is certain, I AM certain that you will not be able to enjoy any of these new exciting benefits and activities unless you are a member and attend the meetings. This is a member-driven club and everything we do will be centered on Fun, Friendly, and Informational activities for our members. That's YOU!

Your Officers and Executive Committee are passionate and committed to making IBM Ring 199 the best IBM Ring in the world. That can't happen without YOU! I look forward to seeing all of you at the January meeting where we will share more exciting news.

If you have any questions, concerns or just want to share your thoughts please drop me an e-mail at mdesorbo@embarqmail.com.

Best,

Mike DeSorbo

P.S. - We are in the beginning stages of planning a public show that all members can participate in as either performers or support crew. Plans are to use the proceeds from this show to cover the IBM National and Ring 199 membership dues for participating members ... Did I tweak your interest? Come to the January meeting to hear the details.

HANNIBAL - AT THE TABLE CLOSE-UP
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This lecture is worth its wait in just the magic philosophy that is discussed. Hannibal is a thinker and a good teacher. Even if you don't like his presentation or his style I would still check this out. The things that he teaches apply to everyone. Hannibal is a real working magician and what he performs is a show that he has perfected over time. This lecture is not full of brand new magic that will fool your magic buddies, instead it is a look into why we do magic. Let's touch on the tricks taught.

Lethal Weapon: A spectator names a celebrity and it was perfectly predicted on a large banner.

Road House: 10 cards are counted and placed in a womans blouse. This is repeated for another woman and a number of cards transports from one to another.

Mystery Card: A card is selected and lost in the deck. Another card is placed face down on the table. The magician tries to guess the card by having the spectator lie and name any card in the deck. The named card happens to be the card on the table and the magician is able to divine the selected card. The magician then makes them change places.

The Pringles Act: A card appears repeatedly under a Pringles can. Another card is selected and it appears under the can as well. The card vanishes from the deck appearing on the magicians forehead and the deck appears under the can. The signed card then is shown to have been hiding clipped inside the can the whole time.

Pringles Chop Cup: A small potato is placed under a pringles can, it jumps to the magicians pocket and back under the can. The can is placed on a spectators hand and a tomato appears. The routine ends with the production of an onion and a Parmesan cheese shaker from the can.

An Idea From Juan Tamariz: He quickly covers a very difficult way for a spectator to find their own card. They name a card and then cut to that card.

Elves Shoes (Performance Only): Telling the story of the elves and the shoemaker the magician slowly folds a bill into an elf boot.

Silver Memories(Performance Only): This is a version of coins and cylinder that is beautiful to watch. For all of the performance only magic you can check out his DVD.

Along with those pieces you get tons of info regarding restaurant work, branding, and how to improve your magic. You get a lot of good information here, a few fun stories and I think that most will enjoy what they get.

A note from Joshua Jay:

What if I told you that today we are releasing a book with contributions from Derren Brown, Teller, and Juan Tamariz? How about if the book also included contributions from John Carney, Darwin Ortiz, Tommy Wonder, Pit Hartling, Rene Lavand, Tom Stone, and nearly thirty other magic luminaries? And what if I told you that this collection was entirely free?

I have spent the last three years working on Magic in Mind, which is my gift to all magicians, young and old, who care deeply about magic. I set out to assemble some of the most important, influential, and helpful essays on magic ever written, and make them available to all serious students of magic for free. Coming in at over 500 pages, Magic in Mind is finally ready.

I am overwhelmed by the generosity of nearly thirty of my heroes, who kindly consented for me to publish or republish their words. Some essays the serious student will be familiar with, from Houdin to Fitzkee to Maven. Others are more arcane, but no less important. For example, I was able to get permission from the Tommy Wonder estate, and to have Juan Tamariz's blessing to publish his essay on "illusionism" for the first time in English. I feel very lucky to have worked on this project, and I hope that magicians who read Magic in Mind will find the material as inspiring as I do.

MAGICIAN: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles
     Documentary Film
Coming Soon

Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles is a remarkable documentary film that looks at the remarkable genius of Orson Welles on the eve of his centenary - the enigma of his career as a Hollywood star, a Hollywood director (for some a Hollywood failure), and a crucially important independent filmmaker.

Orson Welles's life was magical: a musical prodigy at age 10, a director of Shakespeare at 14, a painter at 16, a star of stage and radio at 20, romances with some of the most beautiful women in the world, including Rita Hayworth. His work was similarly extraordinary, most notably Citizen Kane, (considered by many to be the most important movie ever made), created by Welles when he was only 25. In the years following Citizen Kane, Welles's career continued to change as he made film after film (some never finished, many dismissed) and acted in other projects often to earn money in order to keep making his own films.

Orson Welles was also an accomplished and well-known magician. Welles had a lifelong interest in magic, having been taught his first magic tricks by Harry Houdini in the 1920s, when Welles was still a boy. He had already demonstrated his magic tricks in numerous films and television programs including Follow the Boys (1944), Magic Trick (1953), Casino Royale (1967), and on his own unsuccessful 1979 pilot for The Orson Welles Show.

Orson Welles' Magic Show was an unfinished television special by Welles, filmed between 1976 and 1985. In it, Welles performed various magic tricks for the camera, promising that no trick photography is used.

After Orson Welles' death in 1985, all of his unfinished films were bequeathed to his long-term companion and mistress Oja Kodar, and she in turn donated many of them (including Orson Welles' Magic Show) to the Munich Film Museum for preservation and restoration. In 2000 the Munich Film Museum then edited together the complete footage into a 27-minute cut, which has subsequently been screened at numerous film festivals.

The restored footage has never been released on video or DVD.

Magician features scenes from almost every existing Welles film, from Hearts of Age, (which he made in a day when he was only 18 years old) to rarely-seen clips from his final unfinished works like The Other Side of the DreamThe Deep, and Don Quixote, as well as his television and commercial work
