Calling all photographers! What does 'Water for Food' look like to you? Is it a droplet of rain on a cassava crop? Is it a massive earthen dam? Is it rice farmers in Bangladesh or wheat farmers in North Dakota? We invite you to capture those moments that show Water for Food through the lens of your eyes and send them to us as part of the 2016 Water for Food Global Conference Photography Contest. Submissions are due April 10.

On Jan. 20, colleagues from the Water for Food Institute, LI-COR Biosciences and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, among others, participated in a world cafe at the National Council for Science and the Environment's 16th National Conference and Global Forum on Science, Policy and the Environment in Washington, DC, USA. The session, "Future Challenges and Solutions at the Agriculture-Water Nexus," focused on the effects of drought mitigation led by interdisciplinary teams using targeted research, policy outreach, dynamic modeling and technology. CropClimate launches, helps transform data into value
|
CropClimate officially launched Jan. 15. The new tool developed by University of Nebraska-Lincoln crop simulation modeler and Water for Food Institute Faculty Fellow Guillermo Baigorria in collaboration with the private sector transforms complex data into a simple website platform that helps farmers reduce risk and optimize production. | Summer water tour to focus on Colorado's South Platte basin |
 Save the dates! Planning is underway for the 2016 Water and Natural Resources Tour this summer. Participants will travel to Colorado's South Platte River basin June 14-16. The tour will center on many South Platte basin and Denver metro area issues that affect not only Colorado water use, but downstream water availability and use in Nebraska. Registration will likely open May 1.

Transdisciplinary Conversations | Jan. 27

Opening remarks will be given by Buffett Institute Founding Executive Director Samuel J. Meisels. A new exhibition at the KANEKO art space in Omaha will focus on water, featuring projects from the Water for Food Institute and its affiliated faculty.
WATER explores issues impacting water quality and sustainability both within the midwest and globally. These concepts will be highlighted through the combination of scientific data and fine art, while encouraging visitors to consider their own relationship with water.
The exhibition will be open to the public Feb. 5 to April 23.

Spotlight: featured faculty

Patricio Grassini, cropping systems agronomist
|
Patricio Grassini's research, extension and educational activities focus on narrowing the gap between actual and potential crop yield. He studies crop physiology, yield potential, simulation modeling and resource- and energy-use efficiencies across a diverse range of cropping systems, including dryland crops in South America and sub-Saharan Africa and high-yield irrigated corn-soybean systems in the U.S. Corn Belt.
He currently leads a project to benchmark on-farm yields and input-use efficiencies in irrigated corn-soybean systems in Nebraska to improve producer profits while protecting the environment. Patricio also leads the Yield Forecasting Center, which provides real time corn yield forecasts across a large number of locations in the U.S. Corn Belt. He is also helping to develop the
Global Yield Gap and Water Productivity Atlas, an international effort to identify gaps between actual and potential yield for major cropping systems worldwide.
