3RD GRADE SIYUM: CHAYAI SARA

Ms. Leslie Mickel, Director of Lower School, introduced the 3rd grade Siyum.

"Today we celebrate our amazing Third Grade class. They not only present to us an important portion of the Torah, but they present to us our future. They present to us "dreams" in a week we honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., our dreams about the confidence we have in our children carrying on our beautiful heritage. Dreams about the potential these incredible children have for their own bright futures, about what is possible for such young children when they have the loving support of their families, school, and community. Today we celebrate a future bright with the dreams of many possibilities."

Beshalach

I've got manna on my mind. This week's parashah introduces that miraculous food source that rained down from the heavens to sustain the Israelites in the desert. After their exodus from Egypt, Bnei Yisrael did not want for anything; G-d provided for their every need: protection, fresh drinking water, nourishment, and even stain-free clothing. The manna itself possessed the extraordinary ability to taste like anything and like wafers in honey simultaneously. The one caveat regarding the ultimate health and comfort food: the Israelites could only collect it six days a week. G-d did not deliver manna on Shabbat. For the emancipated slaves this reality both challenged and developed their faith. They had to learn to rely on G-d for their sustenance and believe that HaShem would provide as promised. The manna, therefore, was not only a pragmatic plan to feed a nation on the move. It also served as a means of strengthening the Israelites' belief in G-d and reinforced the idea that all gifts emanate directly from Heaven.

Yesterday my family and I participated in a chesed opportunity that is a modern-day incarnation of the manna. Ohr Meir and Beracha is a Jerusalem based non-profit organization that delivers baskets of food to needy families of terror victims. Every Thursday morning a group of volunteers gathers to pack kilo of fruits, vegetables, eggs, challot, and other Shabbat necessities for the hundreds of families in need. Our family sat in an awning-covered Jerusalem alleyway on potato duty--filling bag after bag of this essential ingredient to do our part in helping this worthwhile cause. Although HaShem no longer directly provides manna for the Jews, the essence of Judaism requires us to partner with G-d so that all have access to heavenly gifts. Sensitivity for the needy is baked into Jewish practice, and sharing our G-d given resources reminds us that what we have is as miraculous as the manna. Potatoes may not taste like honey wafers, but the recipients surely savored them as such. In this iteration of the miracle of the manna, we, who helped prepare the gifts, relished the sweetness as well.
Shabbat Shalom from Jerusalem!
LET IT SNOW
Kindergartner's learned describing words and were writing Snow poems describing snow! What better way to describe snow than to actually touch and play with it? Since we had no chance of real snow on the ground.....we made our own!

3RD GRADE DROPS IT LIKE IT'S HOT

Teams of 3rd grade engineers imagined, designed, and constructed parachutes from a table full of unexpected supplies to ensure a safe landing for a 3 gram rubber spider from high atop the lab tables. Exploring air resistance and gravity, these young engineers brainstormed, planned, designed, and redesigned their creations until they met with success.
Happy to report that all spiders enjoyed the experience as did our scientists!

5TH GRADE GRADUATES....TO MS DAVENING

The 5th graders are now part of Middle School Davening. As a surprise and in appreciation of their hard work, they were treated to a homemade "Israeli breakfast" of Malawach, Israeli salad, grated tomatoes, orange juice, and hot chocolate.  With the help of Mr. Rov, Morah Tova, and the bnot sheirut- the students were treated to a wonderful lesson on this week's Parsha given by Rabbi Sabo while enjoying their breakfast outside. What a great taste of davening!

EITZ CHAYIM

This week's Bnot Sherut lesson with Nitzanim was all about the trees! The students learned how to say tree in Hebrew ( עץ) and then created their version of a tree.

PRESCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS!

SEE(D) HOW THEY GROW!
Budding Teenoki Bet scientists did a Tu B'Shvat science experiment this week. They placed beans and acorn squash seeds in plastic bags with wet cotton balls and taped them to the window. They will be checking on them every day. We hope they sprout soon!

BUDDING ARTISTS!
The children in Morah Naomi and Morah Shoshi's Nitzanim class learned  that oil pastels are more than run-of-the-mill Crayola crayons, thanks to Art Teacher,Morah Lindsey. They learned vocabulary and techniques like: smudging, blending, layering, rubbing, and layered sgraffito. After experimenting on a practice paper, the children used their new found techniques to draw their versions of trees in honor of Tu B'shvat.

TU B'SHVAT: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TREES!
Throughout the Early Childhood Program the children are very busy learning about Tu B'Shvat. Experiences with Tu B'shvat singing, dancing, and planting can be seen throughout every classroom. We are looking forward to continuing to explore the "birthday of the trees" and celebrating Tu B'Shvat with the children next week.

"DRAWING THE LINE" AT THE DMA
Our Chaverim children  learned about all different kinds of lines like vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and even a tornado line at the Dallas Museum of Art. They also learned about artist Jackson Pollack who painted with his canvas on the floor and not an easel. The children then went to the Tech Lab and got to work on their own paintings, exploring lines and action painting while they worked. Thanks to all of the parent drivers/chaperones who helped make this trip possible, and a special thank you to our Chaverim PTO Room Parents who coordinated all of the drivers and chaperones for this trip. We wouldn't have had such an amazing experience without you!

NATURE... TO NURTURE OUR JEWISH SOULS

Kindergarten parent Keren Meyer(Sivan) visited kindergarten to talk about TuB'Shvat! She created an outdoor scavenger hunt looking for all things they would find from trees! Students even dug for worms!

MLK: MORE THAN A MEMORY

During MLK Day, Middle School SS and LA classes combined to learn about how the Jim Crow Laws came about, their devastating impact and how MLK lead this country into ending these oppressive laws. Classes reviewed Plessy versus Ferguson and Brown versus the Board of Education and students saw authentic footage and video.
