Reflections on winter and thinking of spring
|
UC San Diego's Spring Break and the changing of seasons is almost upon us. Winter gives over to spring, and it is a time of growth. This past winter and the loss of Shane at the beginning of the quarter gave many of us pause. As we continue to grieve from that loss, let us be reminded of how spring is filled with healing and hope for the coming light. Days extend, and we feel a lengthening of time, to reflect, to think, to feel more deeply, especially with the blessing of longer days. Breaks can be hard times, too - when we have moments to process things we have tucked away in the busy-ness of the academic quarter, when we visit families that may cause increased stress, when we are away from caring networks. Take good care this Spring break. Reach out for any support you need. The UC San Diego LGBT Resource Center will be open Monday through Thursday of Spring Break, March 21-24, from 8am-4:30pm.

many
helpful
crisis resources all still function. Spring will have sprung by the time we all return, and we look forward to seeing everyone for the next academic term.

24-Hour Study Jam

During finals week, the LGBT Resource Center will be open for a 24-hour period, beginning on Sunday at 6pm and carrying over until Monday, when we will have regular hours, until 7pm. |

Jesse Jokerst
Assistant Professor of NanoEngineering
Professor Jesse Jokerst is a new faculty member, who just came here in 2015 from working at Stanford. He's happy here - he loves the space, loves seeing the ocean right nearby and snowcapped mountains in the distance, and this job allows him to work in a lab instead of conducting solo research and teach undergraduates as well. Currently, Jokerst does most of his work on imaging, often working on disease-related issues.
"The UCs are a tremendous opportunity for social mobility," Jokerst says. "It's a good feeling to be part of that." He believes that a person's time at college is incredibly important, and those years can be the time where you not only learn skills, but forge friendships that will last for the rest of your life.
Jokerst received his undergraduate degree at Truman State University and his PhD in Chemistry from UT Austin.
Jokerst says that as a student, he didn't know any LGBT faculty in engineering, and that was a gap in his life that at times made it difficult to picture what his life would look like in the field. He hopes to serve as a role model in that respect here.
"I think the LGBT community has always embraced creativity," Jokerst says. He likes being around new ideas, exciting ideas, and science is also about pushing forward at the boundaries of what we currently know. He thinks that maintaining creativity and fresh ideas is particularly important as one gets older, and being part of the LGBT community continues to be influential in that respect.
For students, he suggests that students make the most of their time on campus, taking full advantage of the opportunities available. And he suggests getting involved in student organizations, which is a powerful way to learn, make connections with other people, and be a part of something larger than yourself. "And of course, study hard," he adds with a laugh. "I have to say that."

CGS 87: Intro to LGBTQ Studies. Professor David Serlin, Tues, 11-1pm.
This seminar will introduce students to important historical discussions and theoretical frameworks that have been central to the development of LGBTQ studies over the past five decades.
CGS 87: Who Cares? Professor Joseph Hankins, Tues, 3:30-4:30pm.
When does the pain of another matter to us? In this seminar we will discuss the labor of caring for different kinds of people and things. What kind of politics might be built out of compassion?

Forks Over Knives Film Screening

This thought-provoking film screening, hosted by BRC intern Refilwe, will show Forks Over Knives
and use it as a starting point to start discussing food history and industry. It will delve into critical analysis of various food industries and the real effect of certain foods on bodies. Scholarships are awarded based on a well-written application essay, demonstrated financial need, a history of strong academic achievement. Note that the application calls for a letter of recommendation in addition to the form, school transcript and essay.

Various Workshops, keynotes, and activities will be designed to unite our community and equip us with the resources necessary to face issues that affect us as marginalized individuals.

Survey of LGBTQ Military Personnel
A doctoral student at the University of Oklahoma is writing a dissertation on the identity process of LGBTQ people who have served in the U.S. military. They're interested in reaching LGBTQ U.S. military personnel, and heterosexual/cisgender
personnel who had a personal or professional relationship with an LGBTQ military service person (someone to whom an LGBTQ service member disclosed their sexual or gender identity).
