August 2015                                                                                                                                         Issue #108
Hello Neighbor,

What a busy summer this has been.  It's already Back to School time, and thanks to your donations, more than 7,000 kids in Broward and Miami Dade will have the supplies they need.

You sang with us at Hard Rock CafĂ©, honored Community Heroes at Bahia Cabana and donated money to support kids in vulnerable living circumstances.

Thank you.

Now, it's time to think about donating those gently worn costumes your kids have outgrown.  Last year nearly 1,700 costumes were collected and distributed to kids in need, through our Operation Candy Corn Program.  Just email Monica@neighbors4neighbors.org and she will send you the forms to be matched up with one of our nonprofit partners serving kids.

We can't do it without you.

Please visit our website and donate now to support programs like Operation Candy Corn, Adopt a Family 4 the Holidays and The Faces of Homelessness.

Sincerely,

Lynne Cameron
Executive Director

New Hope For Veterans Facing Homelessness

Neighbors 4 Neighbors wants to bring awareness to the many Faces of Homelessness, like our nations Veterans and share efforts being implemented to help these heroes tragically living on the street.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from a count conducted in January 2014:

  • There are 49,933 homeless veterans in America.
  • This is a decline of 33% (or 24,837 people) since 2010.
  • There has been a 40% drop in the number of veterans sleeping on the street.

This is part due to a new initiative called Housing First that helps to remove old obstacles that prevented these heroes from entering stable housing more quickly than in the past.  Once off the street, services to help these Vets can be more successful and the reoccurrence of homelessness is decreased considerably.

States like Utah have seen great progress in their communities and have become the model for the rest of the country, including South Florida.

In an article published by the Washington Post:

  • In 2005, Utah had nearly 1,932 chronically homeless
  • 2014, that number had dropped 72% to 539

Not only have they seen a decline of those on the street, but it has saved the state a great deal of money.   Since the homeless become sick or injured more often, it costs the state a considerable amount of money each time a person is admitted to the hospital.

Sadly, some homeless must resort to theft or other petty crimes just to survive.  If arrested, one person, can cost the state upwards of $20,000 or more per year.  The solution was to get Veterans back into housing which was not only more cost effective, but it helped remove the desperation that might lead someone having to break the law just to survive.  Additionally, being in a safer environment, many of their medical issues eliminated.  With this stability, these once thriving members of our community are able to get back to work.  Once on their feet, support services can now work the way they were intended.

It's not just about saving money, it's about rebuilding lives.  Lives of those who once risked so much for their country and often by no fault of their own ended up in the worst place possible, on the street.

Neighbors 4 Neighbors works each day to help connect those in need with those who can help.  Log on to our website www.HelpingFeelsGood.org and along with our partners Wells Fargo and Everglades Holiday Park, you can volunteer to help in our community to end homelessness.

Every donation you make is processed by our heros at Berkowitz Pollack Brant. We can't thank them enough for their support this year.  Together we are able to make a greater impact in the community.

Neighbors 4 Neighbors is a non-profit organization 501 (c) 3 originally created by CBS4 in 1992 in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. As South Florida recovered, CBS4 made a commitment to make Neighbors an integral part of its community service program.  Using the power of television to reach people who want to help and by forging relationships with important community and business leaders, Neighbors has evolved into a valuable resource for individuals and families in our community facing critical needs.
