After years of struggling, Mr. Downer is back on his feet and is more than willing to help others

How you deal with the challenges in life defines who you are.
Sometimes those challenges may be small, and at other times the hurdle ahead can seem insurmountable. But perseverance shapes character -- two things Tony Downer has in spades.
Mr. Downer, 34, has an intellectual disability, a condition which doesn't make his world an easy place to live at times. He has faced many tribulations from being taken advantage of to being shunned by employers.
However, this doesn't stop this Peterborough native. Quite the contrary actually. In fact, every time Mr. Downer is knocked down, he springs back with a positive attitude, leading a charge to not only make his life better, but for those around him.
For the past four years, Mr. Downer has been a member of People First Peterborough -- an advocacy group for people with intellectual disabilities. Since then, people who help and support Mr. Downer have noticed a positive change.
"I've seen Tony grow in confidence and grow his leadership skills because of all the opportunities he's had," says Krista Brailey, outcomes facilitator at Community Living Peterborough. "It's opportunities he's taken. He's active in his own pursuits."

Housing Task Force Update
Twelve creative housing projects, recommended by the Developmental Services Housing Task Force, have received the green light from the Ontario government. The Task Force reviewed and assessed 80 proposals, submitted this past spring by developmental services agencies, family organizations, municipalities and health agencies, alongside other community partners.

Families Are Strong Series:
Information Nights for Parents,
Caregivers & Guardians
Through funding from the United Way, Community Living Peterborough is offering informative evenings for parents, caregivers and guardians who care for someone living with an intellectual disability. These nights happen bimonthly and focus on the important areas when planning for the future, while providing an opportunity for families to meet and connect with one another.
This fall we have focused on housing, hosting the DSO and the Peterborough Housing Corporation we got the reality of housing needs and waiting lists.
In November we have a panel of parents discussing the alternative housing models they are using to provide safe sustainable housing for their adult children.
Come January we move to topics such as financial planning, transition planning and dealing with difficult behaviors. There is no cost to attend these events, and childcare is available upon request.
We invite you to join us!

It is never too early or too late to start planning for the future of a child living with
a disability. Recognizing this, Community Living Ontario, the Ministry of Community and
Social Services and Partners for Planning have collaborated to produce a FREE,
dynamic resource hub for parents and caregivers.
