For everything there is a season,
and a time for every matter under heaven...
~ Ecclesiastes 3.1
With the temps in the 60's, a warm breeze and rain in the forecast- Spring must be just ahead, right? While the first day of Spring is actually March 20- we SPRING AHEAD this Sunday, March 13. T
wice a year we are forced to adjust our sleep habits, synchronizing our biological and digital clocks in order to squeeze more sunlight into our waking hours.
The time change officially takes place at 2 a.m., but you don't have to spring out of bed and move the big hand on your clock ahead an hour. The change is automatic for most smartphones, computers, tablets and other digital devices. If you're still using an analog alarm clock, you'll probably want to move it ahead before you go to sleep on Saturday so that you don't miss church!
A gentleman by the name of George Vernon Hudson is who we have to thank for the time change we experience each Spring and Fall. "Spring Ahead and Fall Back" was suggested by this entomologist who realized through his employment as a shift worker gave him leisure time to collect bugs making Hudson aware of the value of after-hours sunlight. The idea caught on and in 1916 people started using daylight savings time to increase the hours of sunlight in each day. Before Hudson, Benjamin Franklin wrote in an essay that the Parisians could economize candle usage by getting out of bed earlier in the morning, making use of the natural morning light instead.
There are many pros to having "extra hours" in one's day but I must be the first to admit that daylight saving time is not my favorite. Though I love the blessing of longer days of sunshine, the time change messes up my perfectly aligned schedule. It takes my routine
(crazy as it might be to begin with!) and turns it into chaos. At the time change my body clock now cannot decide what time it is. The Spring time change is always the most difficult for, in order to gain precious hours of daylight, we endure the loss of an hour of valuable sleep- and on a Saturday night no less!
So here is an idea:
What a perfect time to change the way we run our lives and make room for more time with God; to actually put GODTIME on the calendar. Maybe God knew that it was good for us to change-up our lives on a routine basis and in the disruption find more time to spend with God. Why not give it a try. Your schedule is disrupted, so what do you have to lose? Your routine is wrecked, so make a new one with ample time for GODTIME!
See you in church

PS-
The start of DST is also a good time to change the batteries and make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order.
