TIFTON NATIVE KNOWN FOR WINNING LPGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Tifton native Nanci Bowen, former LPGA golf champion, recently was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame  at the Atlanta Athletic Club; she is only the second woman from the University of Georgia to be inducted.

"It's hard to believe," Bowen recently told Bulldawg Illustrated, a UGA-SEC fan web site.

"I don't think it has really sunk in yet, really. I had good results in junior and college golf, but winning that major is what really propelled me to the next level. I'm just thrilled to be mentione d in the same company with all of those other great golfers from the state of Georgia ."

Bowen was one of five golfers inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame this year.

She is  best known for  her first professional victory at the Nabisco Dinah Shore in 1995 ,one of the LPGA's major championships . In 2002 , she crossed the $1 million mark in career earnings. She was a member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association's Tour Player Executive Committee from 1999-2001 and served as its vice president in 2001.

Bowen p layed in 12 U.S. Opens and is a 14-year LPGA tour veteran. She was Player of the Year in 1993 on the Futures Tour. Before turning professional in 1990, Bowen was the winner of the Trans National Amateur in 1988, and was semi-finalist in the Women's U.S. Amateur in 1987. Bowen was awarded a full golf scholarship to the University of Georgia, where she was a two-time All-America selection.
graduate of Tift County High School, Bowen competed in many competitions administered by the Georgia State Golf Association, winning four consecutive Georgia Girls' Championships in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984.

She founded the Nanci Bowen Charity Event golf tournament in Tifton, raising more than $500,000 in 15 years to benefit Hospice of Tift Area and the Anita Stewart Oncology Center at Tift Regional Medical Center, helping individuals undergoing chemotherapy or radiation to pay their expenses. Bowen also has been a volunteer golf instructor for kids with Autism and has served as athletic director at Wesleyan College in Macon.

She currently resides in Travelers Rest, S.C., and teaches golf to dedicated players in Greenville, S.C., at the Furman University golf course. She also hosts "All Things Golf," a podcast on Web Talk Radio, giving her a chance to use skills she learned earning her degree in public relations at UGA.

Tifton's Rhythm & Ribs BBQ Festival was a big success as a large crowd came out Saturday to  Fulwood  Park to hear live music, have fun and eat barbecue and other grilled delicacies.

professional and an amateur "backyard" barbecue competition was held. The professional barbecue competition was sanctioned by the Georgia BBQ Association. The Backyard Cookoff Competition was open to anyone in the categories of chicken, pulled pork and ribs.

The top five in the Grand Champion backyard competition, which combines scores from all three categories, were:

No. 1: Code Blue BBQ, who was the top grand champion and won $500.
Coming in  second was  Two Toe's BBQ third
Smokin' After Midnight; fourth, Badonkadonk;  
and fifth Fatboys of Tenneson  Nissan .

Winners in the  individual categories were: 
- Chicken - Code Blue BBQ
- Pulled Pork - Badonkadonk
- Ribs - Two Toe's BBQ

LOCAL OFFICIALS SEEK RE-ELECTION

The political season is upon us, and election announcements are coming daily

On Monday, Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough, announced on Facebook: " This morning, I officially qualified to run for re-election as Tift County sheriff. I'm asking for your prayers and for your vote."

Steve Wood, who previously sought the office, says he is considering running for sheriff again.

Also Monday, Tift County Tax Commissioner  Chad Alexander said, " I am humbled and honored in formally announcing my intentions to seek re-election as the Tift County tax commissioner. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the taxpayers, providing knowledge of the job and an educated staff that is second to none. I respectfully request your support to

remain in office and continue providing the best service possible to the citizens of Tift County."


Qualifying is underway for the 2016 general primary and nonpartisan elections. According to a press release from the Georgia secretary of state's office, qualifying opened at 9 a.m. Monday and ends at noon Friday, March 11.

Candidates for the state legislature, Congress and other offices started qualifying Monday to run in Georgia's May 24 primary. U.S. Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., is officially seeking a fourth term in Washington. U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., is also seeking re-election

State Rep. Penny Houston, R-Nashville, who represents part of Tift County, also announced that she is

 running again.

"I am pleased to announce my candidacy for re-election to the 170th House District. This morning, I qualified through the Republican party at the state Capitol. I appreciate your support, advice and friendship as we prepare for the 2016 elections," Houston said Monday.

According to Secretary of State Brian Kemp, voter registration is open for any Georgians not currently registered to vote. The registration deadline for the May 24 elections is Tuesday, April 26. Georgians can register to vote or update their  information at   https://registertovote.sos.ga.gov/ . Individuals may also download the free "GA Votes" smartphone app on Apple and Android devices to complete or update their registration.

TIFT PRE-K JOINS 'READ ACROSS AMERICA'

With graduation approaching and college tuition on the horizon, many students and parents are looking for scholarship opportunities. The Julian & Jan Hester Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship established by the Community Banking Association (CBA) to assist deserving high-school seniors in their first year of college and to promote community banking.

South Georgia Banking Co. (SGBC) is accepting applications for the 2016 Julian & Jan 
Memorial Scholarship. The program awards $1,000 annually to four exemplary high school students who plan to attend a Georgia college, university or technical school beginning the fall semester after they graduate high school. 

In addition, the one applicant selected by SGBC as the local winner will be awarded a $500 cash scholarship before moving on to the CBA selection process. 

The scholarship is named after a long-time CBA chief executive officer, the late Julian Hester and his daughter, Jan, wo was a senior at the University of Georgia when she died in an auto accident in April 1990.
