Commuters: Plan for NJTransit Rail Strike
10,000 add'l cars/peak hr traveling to/from NYC

In the event that a NJ Transit strike, now set to start on March 13th, is not averted, no trains would run on any of NJ Transit's commuter rail lines. NJ Transit buses and Light Rail lines will continue to operate and 30 bus routes will have enhanced service.
It is estimated that there will be 62,000 morning and then evening commuters who cannot be handled by bus. This is expected to cause massive delays on all major road arteries into New York from New Jersey. As many as 10,000 additional cars on the road per peak commuting hour is the current estimate. One traffic consultant predicted that traffic jams could back up 20-23 miles from the Hudson River crossings and add 60 minutes to the regular commute times for rail riders using shuttle buses.
NJ Transit and private carrier buses, all light rail, PATCO, PATH, and NY Waterway and SeaStreak ferries will cross-honor NJ Transit rail tickets. Light rail trains would continue to run, with service enhancements on the Hudson-Bergen light rail line.
Those who can find no other contingency commuting plan, such as telecommuting, flex time, or bus/light rail/ferry, are also being strongly advised to set up a car pool now to help alleviate the congestion.
