March Madness or
March Happiness?

As you probably know, March Madness is a term used to describe the NCAA College Basketball Tournament. It also makes me think of our current presidential race and you could even make an argument that our current stock market volatility should be called March Madness.

I'd prefer, at least this year, on calling this month March Happiness. Let's look at the positives; baseball spring training is here, the weather is beautiful (at least in Florida), St. Patrick's Day parties, compelling college basketball games on TV, an early Easter this year, and whatever else you find happy. For me, the biggest reason I want to call it March Happiness is that my daughter, Heather, is getting married on March 12th!

One of the greatest pleasures I have as your financial coach is that I get personal insight into your family life, which ultimately helps me gain clarity with my own family. That is why I am sharing my happiness with you.

Some of you may have spoken to Heather since she worked for me while in college on summer and winter breaks. She answered phones, helped with paperwork, and also helped me write my book, "It Wasn't on my Calendar". I was secretly hoping she would come to work for us after she graduated from college. I guess I did not make that great of an impression on her since she is now studying to be a Physician's Assistant.

So my little girl is getting married and that is just the circle of life. It is a bitter sweet moment, as I know the number of years for me on this earth is perhaps getting shorter.

So, please join me in choosing to focus on the happiness and not the madness this month.

Most people do not plan for a medical, mental or aging crisis for a parent-or themselves, and if such a crisis is not on your calendar, prepare now. None of us know what we don't know, and when a loved one's health and/or mind are failing, this is no time to have a crash-course in learning.

  • Who do I turn to for advice?
  • What kind of questions do I ask?
  • Do I plan a loved one's care for this immediate crisis-or make a plan that includes future needs as conditions worsen?
  • How do I respond to the many needs: place to live (kinds of facilities), care (who provides and what kinds), costs (and how to pay them), and advisors (finding the right people to handle finances and elder planning).
If you have more questions than answers, this first-hand guidebook, written by a CPA/ financial planner about his dad's situation, will provide answers. Now you will be able to deal with your own situation with more knowledge and focus.
