If you're thinking of going away this Spring Break, you should know that cyber-crimes significantly increase when traveling.

Using Wi-Fi

Connecting to the internet with your technology is always at a risk because these are unsecure connections, as anyone can gain access to the Wi-Fi because it's a public domain. Criminals can get your personal information using access points that seem legit or trustworthy.

**Tip #1: Ensure that you know who is providing the Wi-Fi connection and that the name is correct, as criminals who are phishing for your information may add one extra letter or digit to the legit Wi-Fi provider's connection name.
Malware

Specific malware named "keylogger" is software in disguise, that can be attached to an unfamiliar network or device and is designed to captur e any data that is entered into it.

**Tip #2: Be careful which data you enter, if you have to use an unknown device for example; an internet café computer or connection to someone else's network.
Bluetooth

You may want to adjust your Bluetooth settings on your devices as some devices have automatic connection and will access your data without authorization.

**Tip #3: Disable your Bluetooth networking to prevent unwanted connections.
Other tricks and trades to protect your devices while traveling:
  • Insist on using a password.
  • Ensure you are using a cloud program that offers location finding and/or data wiping options, in case your device gets stolen or lost.
  • Disable your Wi-Fi connection when you aren't using it.
  • Avoid charging your devices on computers, USB drives or docking stations that are unknown to you.
  • If needed, buy any hardware or software from an approved dealer.
  • When not in use, lock up your devices in a storage safe or somewhere secure.
