Downtown Open 4 Business Competition

With Main Street Iowa and the Iowa Economic Development Authority, Downtown Partners presents the Open 4 Business competition for either a new or expanding for-profit business locating in the Main Street district. Each of the state's 52 Main Street organizations can submit one business concept. Three local applicants will pitch their business concepts to Downtown Partners, with the winner receiving a rental assistance grant if they open in downtown Burlington. In addition, they will go on to one of five regional competitions in June for a chance at $8000. The five finalists will present their ideas in a statewide contest in August for an additional $20,000 in funding.

Farmers Market Vendors Sought
Although it's still chilly outside, Downtown Partners is already looking forward for the 2016 season of the farmers market. The market, supported by Great Western Bank, has a new location this year! It will take place in the 300-500 blocks of Jefferson on Thursdays from 5 to 7 PM beginning May 5.

The Jefferson St. Farmers Market steering committee is offering a discount to returning seasonal vendors who sign up in advance, as well as for new seasonal vendors - only $100 a space for the entire 22 week season. They are especially interested in local and specialty produce, handcrafted items, and prepared food vendors.
If you are interested in being part of the region's most successful farmers market, download the application and guidelines at www.greaterburlington.com, or call Downtown Partners at 319-208-0056.
The Latest News...
  • Work on the waiting room at the depot is underway! For decades, train and bus passengers have had to use a small "temporary" waiting area put up after the 1993 flood - an underwhelming welcome to our community. With a state transportation grant, City funding, and private funding, the grand waiting area of this landmark will be restored.  Additional funding will be needed for expanded uses such as a public venue or restaurant.
  • The Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission has put together the first draft of the comprehensive downtown parking study, including recommendations for changes. The completed study will be presented to the council and stakeholders this spring - stay tuned.
  • Depending on the weather, the DPI Design Committee will be scheduling days and times to sweep the sand from the sidewalks and gutters in late March or early April. The city's Public Works Department will then clear it from the streets. We'll send out a reminder with details prior to the cleanup; your help will be greatly appreciated.
