Congratulations South Bay Junior Academy
|
This past week I was honored to have been invited to attend 'Let Your Light Shine,' a celebration honoring the first 50 years of South Bay Junior Academy, located at 4400 Del Amo Blvd, Torrance.
As I entered the large multi-purpose room, I noticed one specific thing: all of the children looked so happy. As they began to line up to play an instrument or sing a song, their enthusiasm to perform was evident. 'Let Your Light Shine' provided a brief walk through the first 50 years of South Bay Junior Academy, featuring songs from particular decades to tell the story.
The evening was filled with remarkable instrumental solos by students, music that was uplifting, and a genuine caring for the school from all of those in attendance. Francey Marzicola enthusiastically welcomed me and I soon felt right at home. Susan Vlach, principal of the school for 29 years, was also very welcoming and proud to be a part of the 50 year history of the school.
South Bay Junior Academy has served the South Bay community with caring and qualified teachers offering a challenging academic program to students, grades Kindergarten through eighth. Each student's unique gifts are recognized as the teachers teach to the whole child. One very impressive fact is that the Academy is technologically progressive. The One-to-One Apple Laptop Computer Program was introduced in 2007, placing the school at the forefront of educational technology in the South Bay. Currently, students in Grades 7 and 8 are using 2010 MacBook Pros to create multi-media presentations, spreadsheets and documents to do research and complete assignments.
Congratulations, South Bay Junior Academy for celebrating 50 years of rich history in Torrance. It was so evident, to me, that students enjoy attending and faculty members enjoy teaching at the academy. 'Let Your Light Shine' was absolutely a perfect theme for a musical tribute to the school.

Los Angeles' minimum wage on track to go up to $15 by 2020
|
The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday backed a plan to raise the city's minimum wage to $15 per hour, joining a trend sweeping cities across the country as elected leaders seek to boost stagnating pay for workers on the lowest rungs of the socio-economic ladder.
Lawmakers agreed to draft an ordinance raising the $9-an-hour base wage to $15 by 2020 for as many as 800,000 workers, making L.A. the largest city in the nation to adopt a major minimum-wage hike. Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle already have approved similar increases, and raising the federal minimum wage has moved to the forefront of the Democratic Party's agenda.
"Make no mistake," said Councilman Paul Krekorian, who was instrumental in shaping the city's plan. "Today the city of Los Angeles, the second biggest city in the nation, is leading the nation."

LA County Seeking Input from Businesses on Possible Minimum Wage Increase
|
On March 31, 2015, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion instructing the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs to gather input from business owners on a potential increase of the Minimum Wage. The County needs to receive input from local businesses to better understand the realities of operating a business in the county in order to appropriately assess the implications of a wage increase. The TACC encourages you to provide feedback, which can be given through the county's website at www.dcba.lacounty.gov. |
The TACC, in partnership with the Go For Broke National Education Center, provided its members with profound insights into team resiliency and cohesion at last week's Building Resilience event: traits that the 442nd embodied as they became the most decorated unit in Military History for their size and length of service. |
