10 Naturopathic Earth Day Tips for Living a Healthier Life for Yourself and for the Planet

1. Shop Organic and local:
the scientific consensus is that small doses of pesticides can cause lasting damage to our health and to the planet. By shopping organic and local we encourage less chemical use and protect ourselves and the environment.
2. Choose "Fragrance Free" Products: Fragrances are among the most toxic ingredients in many of our personal care products. They are absorbed through our skin and also get washed away, and pollute our water systems.

And yet another link that could help you prevent cancer:

3. Clean the air in your home and at work with plants: The air in many of our homes is full of pollutants from the off gassing of our furniture and building materials. The top 5 air-purifying plants: Mass cane, Pot mum, Gerbera daisy, Warnecki, and Ficus .
4. Stop using Plastic: Today's plastics are highly toxic. Plastics do not break down well in our environment either and can last for thousands of years continuously seeping toxic substances into the environment.
5. Avoid Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's): Genetically modified organisms are plants, animals and insects that have genes from another species inserted into their genetic makeup . GMO's lead to many health problems , increased chemical use, killing of valuable insect populations and pollution of our soils, waterways and air.
6. Stop using pesticides and/or herbicides around your home: Pesticides and herbicides are highly toxic and they linger in the soils and plant material long after they have been sprayed. Kids and animals are the first to be affected by these chemicals as their bodies are smaller and closer to the ground, and they absorb larger amounts of the chemical.
7. Get some vitamin N as in Nature: Studies show that people who spend time in nature recover quicker and to a fuller extent. Coming in contact with the earth also offers a grounding effect to our electrical system, removing free radicals from our bodies.
8. Get at least 8 hours of sleep a night in the dark: When we are in the darkness, signals are sent to our brain to begin powering down so that rest, recovery and repair systems begin. Sleeping in the dark also means we have turned off electrical devices and are conserving energy.
9. Eat food that is in season: Seasonal foods provide specific nutrients that help us to handle the environment that we are living in. Summer foods for example protect our skin from sun damage, and fall foods detoxify our systems and have antiviral properties.
10. Utilize Naturopathic Medicine: Naturopathic Doctors use non-toxic modalities, reducing the pollution of our drinking water from pharmaceutical agents. By making beneficial behavioral changes and providing nutritional, homeopathic, and botanical medicines, we contribute to better health, and to a cleaner, healthier planet.

Discover How Environmental Toxins May Be the Cause of Your Symptoms

Environmental medicine is a focus of naturopathic medicine that deals with patients who have been exposed to potentially harmful substances from their jobs, environment, water, food, air, homes etc... With the use of more chemicals and toxic products rising, our exposure to things like heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, formaldehyde and other toxins is increasing. Americans encounter thousands of chemicals on a daily basis, most of which have never been tested on human beings. And the health consequences of these chemical combinations is beginning to surface.

Our bodies are designed to eliminate unwanted materials from our systems; it does this on a daily basis. But when the amount of exposure becomes too great, and the body cannot keep up, toxins can begin to accumulate. Some toxins go into storage in our fat, while other substances such a lead get stored in our bones and brain. Over time illness can develop in the form of skin conditions, chronic fatigue, foggy thinking, chemical sensitivity, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, obesity, autoimmune diseases, allergies, hypersensitivities, depression, anxiety, endocrine disruption, and other acute and chronic conditions.

SNMC offers detoxification programs for our patients who are experiencing toxic burden. Aspects of environmental medicine include:
  • Intravenous nutritional therapy
  • Contrast hydrotherapy
  • Nutritional therapy
  • Homeopathy
  • Individually tailored supplemental programs
  • Education about toxins
  • Reducing recurrent exposure
  • Learning how to create a clean environment and more, are available to our patients who have been exposed to environmental agents.
Dr. Godby and Dr. Ethelbah will create an individualized, comprehensive, holistic treatment plan for your specific needs. If you suspect that you have been exposed to pollutants through occupational hazards, through daily living, in your home, in your neighborhood or elsewhere, please schedule an appointment to discuss testing and treatment options.
