Congratulations to 2016 I.O.W.A. STEM Teacher Awardee, Reagan Boeset
On Wednesday, March 23, at the Clear Creek Amana School Board meeting, Clear Creek Amana Middle School STEM teacher Reagan Boeset was recognized as the 2016 I.O.W.A. STEM Teacher Award recipient! This award was sponsored by Kemin Industries and the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council.
This award recognizes and celebrates one teacher from each of the six STEM regions who goes above and beyond to increase their student's interest in STEM. Each recipient was selected by a panel of judges after being nominated for the award by a colleague, school administrator, parent, student or community member and completing an application showcasing their contributions to STEM education. Each recipient will receive $1,500 for personal use and another $1,500 for their classroom.
Reagan Boeset plans to use the awards' funds through the purchase of more "electronics and robotics-type of supplies" to move toward the dream that students will "have everything they need to tinker, make, design, improve, fix, etc."
As the 6-8 grade STEM teacher at Clear Creek Amana Middle School, Boeset explains that she loves teaching science because she "can support curiosity, creativity, wonder, investigation, inquiry, analysis, and problem solving."
"I am a firm believer that experiences lead to learning, and I can't believe that I get paid to try to create awesome experiences for my students," Boeset described. Boeset cites her involvement in the University of Iowa's STEM Innovator program as one of the unique opportunities that has allowed her to help create these valuable experiences for her STEM students.
Boeset and with the five other region recipients were recognized together at the Iowa Governor's Mansion, Terrace Hill, by Gov. Branstad, Lt. Gov. and STEM Council Co-Chair Kim Reynolds and Kemin Industries President and CEO, and STEM Council Co-Chair, Dr. Chris Nelson on the evening of Monday, April 18th. 2016-17 Scale-Up Awardees Announced: Currently Available PD Dates
On April 4, the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council awarded over 250 educators from across Southeast Iowa with STEM units and lessons through the STEM Council's STEM Scale-Up Program to impact over 12,600 youth during the 2016-2017 academic year.
Just as 14 current STEM programs draw to a close for the 2015-2016 school year, the STEM Council selected 11 more high-qualified STEM programs from a pool of dozens in January to "scale up" across PreK-12 in Iowa's schools, after-school programs and other educational settings for 2016-2017. Interested educators applied to receive these programs, ranging from building robots and coding programs to conducting agricultural field experiences and learning about STEM careers.
"It's incredible to know we will inspire another 100,000 young learners in this fifth round of the STEM Scale-Up Program," said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, STEM Council co-chair. "The credit for the continued growth and outreach of this program in the last four years goes to our regional STEM managers and their regional advisory boards, who keep the STEM Council's priorities on the forefront and deliver these programs to the areas of Iowa with the highest need."
All six regional STEM managers, guided by their regional STEM advisory boards, awarded these programs with vital funding from the Iowa Legislature, leveraging $3.1 million spread evenly across the six STEM regions of the state. The demand from this year's applicants equated to nearly $6 million with interest from 256 cities in Iowa and the highest application rate from elementary educators.
"The evidence of effect for this program has been remarkable," said Kemin Industries President and CEO Dr. Chris Nelson, STEM Council co-chair. "Independent evaluators provide us with data that shows strong gains on both aspects of the STEM Council's overarching goal to improve performance and increase interest in STEM among young Iowans."
During the next couple of months, awarded educators will receive communication from the Southeast STEM Hub Manager Kristine Bullock and their respective program providers regarding professional development sessions, which will start in July for some programs. Below is current professional development information:
Making STEM Connections
July 12 (2 sessions available), State Hygienic Laboratory, Coralville
August 9 (1 session available), Fairfield Middle School, Fairfield
PLTW - Introduction to Computer Science
Sunday, July 24-Friday, July 29, Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa, Coralville
PLTW - Principles of Biomedical Science
Sunday, July 24-Friday, August 5, State Hygienic Laboratory, Coralville
Power Teaching Math
July 18-21: The New Leaders Institute will be held in Baltimore, MD
. Included in each award is $1,700 for transportation, lodging and meals to support 1 representative for each award. This is for school leaders: administrators, teacher leaders, instructional coaches, etc., whereas the August training is for the implementing educators. I will be attending this institute, FYI.
August 18-19: Two-day training to occur before school starts: August 18, 10 AM to 4 PM, August 19, 8 AM to 4 PM, North Central STEM Hub office, Iowa State University
, 1259 Stange Rd, Ames. Included with each award is $170/educator support to attend this training. Since substitutes will not be needed since school cannot be in session these days the hope is that this support will cover a vast majority of the expenses incurred to participate in the training. The North Central Hub will provide lunch on the 18th to accommodate the later start. Educators will be responsible for all other meals on these training days.
SEPUP
Scale-Up educators choose one day of PD to attend. Available PD days are scheduled for July 25-28, with a location to be determined.
