Michigan in Context

Lumina Foundation (April 2016)
Lumina Foundation (April 2016)
For the sixth year in a row, Michigan's postsecondary educational attainment rate increased.  Degree attainment among 25-64 year olds is now 39.3% (up from 38.4% last year and up from 35.7% in 2008).  For the first time ever, Stronger Nation is providing an estimate of Americans with a high-quality certificate.  According to their data, another 4% of Michiganders have a high-quality certificate -- so the state's official attainment rate is 43.3%.

Economic Policy Institute (Apr. 6, 2016)
Economic Policy Institute (Apr. 6, 2016)
The Economic Policy Institute recently compared the cost of providing day care and early childhood education to the cost of public higher education in the United States. Michigan has among the lowest ratios of these costs, but infant care is reported to still cost just 12.5% less than resident tuition at Michigan public universities.

National Center for Education Statistics (April 2016)
The US Dept. of Education predicts that Michigan public K-12 enrollment will decline 6.4% between 2011 and 2023, and public high school enrollment will decline by 11.4% between 2011 and 2023. Public high school graduates should fall by 18.3% in the same period.
Quotable Quotes

"As a product of a public university, Wayne State University, Lt. Gov. Hampton could consider paying the state of Michigan back for the portion of her education picked up by Michigan taxpayers. Given some of the recent news out of the Wolverine State, a check sent up to Lansing would probably be much appreciated." - Matt Erwin, on the topic of Kentucky budget cuts for higher education.
