Message from Your Councilman....
Hello District III,

I am eagerly awaiting our district breakfast on April 30th! Unfortunately our speaker Chief Gordon Ramsay had an unforeseen scheduling conflict. We have slightly changed things up, our new guest speaker will be Deputy Chief Gavin Seiler and WPD's K-9 unit will present a demonstration. Deputy Chief Seiler will address what WPD is currently doing to combat property crimes in the area and will also convey Chief Ramsay's vision for the future of the WPD. I am excited to see everyone there enjoying a great time of food and fellowship. We are ready to answer questions or concerns about the South/Southeast portions of the city.

Sincerely,

James Clendenin
Council Member District III

Seeking More Efficient Pothole Repair

Single Operator "DuraMaxx"
Existing "DuraPatcher"
Last summer, the City unveiled its first, and currently only, spray injection patching machine.  Since then, staff has been putting it to good use throughout the City, working hard to resolve problems where traditional methods have typically failed.  The results thus far have been very encouraging.  Repairs made using the new technology are being accomplished much more quickly and cheaply than removal and replacement, and lasting much longer than traditional patches.  In fact, evidence to date suggests that these repairs will last at least 5 times longer than traditional patches, which means significantly higher returns on the City's investments.

However, Public Works & Utilities staff is looking for opportunities to take this and other technologies even farther.  Just this week, the manufacturer of our existing spray injection machine conducted a formal demonstration of its single operator version, called DuraMaxx.  The DuraMaxx utilizes the same spray injection technology, but couples it with in-cab, single operator operation.  By keeping the operator safely inside the cab, alternatives like the DuraMaxx could allow for a 50% reduction in patching crew size, from 2 persons to just one.

The department intends to continue vetting the DuraMaxx, competing alternatives and, of course, budget implications.  But, the future looks very promising.  The end result could very well be not just huge efficiency gains in patching operations, but also freed resources and the ability to get even more done on City streets.

Old Town Safety Sustainability
Recommendations Report

The City of Wichita officials on Thursday released a report that makes recommendations to sustain and improve safety in Old Town, particularly during high-traffic weekend and nighttime periods.

"Crime report data show that incidents in Old Town have been significantly decreasing since 2012," said Mayor Jeff Longwell who released the report during his weekly news briefing at City Hall. "Old Town is a safe entertainment district. The recommendations from the report are designed to sustain and improve the safety of the community, with the support of partners."  The seven-page report, which can be found at www.wichita.gov, was drafted by City officials with assistance from Old Town Association, Wichita Downtown Development Corp. and other partners. It has several key recommendations related to:
  • Allowing the hiring of off-duty law enforcement officers;
  • Partnering with the Wichita Fire Department to increase public safety presence;
  • Instituting enhanced traffic-control measures;
  • Streamlining citation and enforcement processes;
  • Implementing additional licensing requirements; and
  • Conducting further research on several safety aspects including the establishment of a security fund.
The recommendations are in various stages of implementation and efforts are primarily led by WPD, with support from other City departments, said Denise Peters, a City Manager Office staffer who helped draft the report.
