Great Clips cuts ribbon in Waverly

Business and community leaders gathered at Great Clips in Waverly on April 8 for the store's official ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration.

The event provided an opportunity to meet the management and staff as well as enjoy refreshments. Lee Vescelius, president of Laventure, Inc. (a Great Clips franchisee), indicated that Great Clips has received a warm welcome into the Waverly community and he thinks the store will do well located along the busy U.S. Route 23.

Geoff Grimes, of the Atomic Credit Union and the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, welcomed Great Clips to the community on behalf of the Chamber.

Vescelius has seven Great Clips salons in the Columbus area, and the Waverly store is his eighth store and the first one he has opened that is not in the Columbus area. Kelly Jordan is the general manager for all of Vescelius' stores.

Great Clips, Inc., was established in 1982 in Minneapolis. Today, Great Clips has more than 3,900 salons throughout the United States and Canada and reportedly employs nearly 35,000 stylists.

New DOE Grant Supports Continued
OU Research, Outreach for Portsmouth Site

The Department of Energy recently awarded a grant to Ohio University to develop publicly available information related to the environmental cleanup of the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant site in Pike County, Ohio.

The five-year, $2.5-million-dollar grant will also continue public outreach initiated under a previous DOE grant, including informing stakeholders on cleanup activities and future use of the DOE site. This work involves OU's Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs and its PORTSfuture project.

"The Department of Energy values this university partnership that provides important research and outreach supporting the cleanup of our gaseous diffusion plants," said Robert Edwards, Acting Manager of DOE's Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office. "This institution of higher learning plays an important role in helping DOE and the community address challenges and identify opportunities associated with these historic sites."

With the new funding, OU will continue assisting the local community reuse organization and other site stakeholders to inform site cleanup and property transfer efforts while identifying viable opportunities for future use of the Portsmouth Site.

"A major goal of this project is to provide support to the local community reuse organization in their efforts to realize the citizens' articulated preferences to reindustrialize the site," said Stephanie Howe, PORTSfuture program director. "This will support stable, good-paying jobs that contribute to the regional economy and improve the quality of life for many families in the surrounding counties."

The grant also supports educational outreach programs, including work with students at high schools in Pike County. The high school students prepare summaries of DOE's Annual Site Environmental Reports for the Portsmouth Site to communicate complex cleanup information to the public.

A recent addition to the PORTSfuture program, which is continued under the recently awarded grant, is the Virtual Symposium, a portal featuring presentations covering recent activities completed by both OU and the University of Kentucky, which received a similar grant related to the cleanup of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant site.

MOU to Explore Joint Sales and
Business Development Opportunities

Centrus Energy Corp. (NYSE MKT: LEU) announced today that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with ConverDyn to explore the potential for joint sales of the companies' nuclear fuel products and services to utility customers around the world.

Healthy Lifestyle Programs Coming to a Community Near You!

Most know the Area Agency on Aging District 7 (AAA7) for the assistance we can provide with long-term care home and community-based services, programs and resources that are available in our ten-county district.  Did you know that we also provide "Healthy Lifestyle Programs"? These evidence-based programs help individuals learn to take control of their lives and manage health conditions.  Thanks to a network of community coaches and members of our staff, these programs are available in a number of communities throughout our ten-county district.  The AAA7 offers services in Adams, Brown, Gallia, Highland, Jackson, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto and Vinton Counties.  We are excited to report that we already have classes scheduled for the remainder of the year throughout our ten counties, and look forward to bringing these classes to a community near you throughout 2016!

"A Matter of Balance" is an educational program that teaches practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels.  Participants learn to view falls as controllable, set realistic goals, change their environment to reduce risk factors, and increase strength and balance through exercise.

The "Chronic Disease Self-Management Program" and "Diabetes Self-Management Program" helps adults gain confidence in their ability to manage symptoms and understand how their health problems affect their lives.  Individuals who could benefit from the program are those with long-term health challenges such as asthma, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, or other life-long conditions.  The program emphasizes the persons' role in managing their illness and building their self-confidence so that they can be successful in adopting healthy behaviors.  Participants in the class learn to deal with pain, fatigue and depression; discover ways to be more physically active; learn how to eat healthier; learn better ways to talk about their health with physicians and family; set personal goals; and find ways to relax and deal with stress.  Participants can represent an individual with a chronic disease, a caregiver of someone with a chronic disease, or someone who wants to learn more about healthy living.

We are excited to offer these wonderful programs to our communities.  If you would like to learn more about these classes, or are interested in attending an upcoming class in your county, please call 1-800-582-7277 and we can share the schedule with you and add you to the list for an upcoming class.  Or, visit our website at  www.aaa7.org to view a calendar under our "Upcoming Events" section.

If you would like to learn more about long-term care home and community-based services that are available in your community, please call our Agency at 1-800-582-7277.  Our Resource Center is available to anyone in the community looking for information or assistance with long-term care options and resources.  We can even schedule an in-home assessment with a nurse or social worker at no cost to discuss these options and resources in more detail.

SUMMER ARRIVES with
JIMMY BUFFETT PARTY
and PARROTS of the CARIBBEAN
Saturday, June 4

Sugarloaf Mountain will get tropical as Southern Ohioans dig out their island-wear, dust off their leis and grab their shades to party with the number one Jimmy Buffett tribute act in the country, the Parrots of the Caribbean! Summer will officially arrive in Chillicothe with Parrots of the Caribbean on Saturday, June 4 for a 7:00 pm concert. The POTC band performs a high-energy, original stage show featuring a "Salute to Jimmy Buffett". These seasoned professionals perform Buffett's biggest songs, their own original Cajun country-rock hits, along with wild and crazy and sometimes outrageous stage show antics. The band has delighted audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada for over a decade. In 2012 they performed for our Troops in Okinawa Japan.

The five musicians who make up the Parrots of the Caribbean exemplify a wide variety of talent. Dave Albrecht, lead singer began his career impersonating "Elwood Blues," the Dan Akroyd character for a Blues Brothers Band. After traveling with it for five years he joined "Legends in Concert" a top-ranked show of impersonators in Las Vegas. He eventually transitioned to his Jimmy Buffett act gathering the finest seasoned musicians. Jeff "Hawaiian Hillbilly" Cline on lead and rhythm guitar and backup vocals is as diverse in his styles of music as his heritage. With his Polynesian mother and Air Force father he grew up in three states and German. On keyboard, Kenny "Tips" Rice, called "The Professor" brings more than 40 years of professional musical performance. A classically trained pianist, Rice has transitioned to all musical genres and an assortment of groups. He has opened for such artists as Edgar Winter, Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, George Carlin, Michael Bolton and Willie Nelson. Greg Martin on percussion and vocals has been performing for nearly 40 years across the country and abroad. Gary "Riptide" Rigmaiden on bass and back-up vocals hails from the Golf Coast of Louisiana and spent part of his youth in Spain and Brazil. For him the island music, songs of the sea, bayou themes and beachcomber blues of Jimmy Buffet's music are right at home.

"A Parrots of the Caribbean concert is one of the most fun nights you can have anywhere doing anything.   We'll have margaritas, cheeseburgers, beach balls and expect everyone to dress appropriately with tasteless Hawaiian shirts and flip flops.  Let's celebrate the arrival of summer together!" Said Scioto Society CEO, Brandon Smith.

Tickets are $20 for reserved seating in advance and $25 day of show.  Concerts are rain or shine events and all sales are final. There will be no opening act.
