ff Volunteer Appreciation Week

Our volunteers are so connected to the mission of Camp Kudzu that they go to great lengths to get to camp. This map is just one of the many examples of the bond that volunteers create with our mission and the children we serve. Each summer over 450 volunteers from near and far schedule time to be at each of our three overnight summer camp sessions. Look at this map and see for yourself just how far and how faithful our volunteers travel to be with our campers this summer. As the song goes, "Ain't no mountain high enough..."
These volunteers, staff members as we call them, serve in the important roles of:

- Activity Staff                - Head Staff
                     - Endocrinologist           - Clinician
                     - Cabin Counselor        - Head Staff
                     - Dietary Team               - Pump Palace Staff
                     - Logistics Staff              - Logistics Head Staff
                     - Medical Clinician in Training (MCIT)

How many volunteers are needed for each overnight summer camp session?
  • It takes at least 140 adult volunteer staff members at each overnight session of summer camp.  40-50 Medical volunteers are needed, with at least 15 of them being clinicians.
How many volunteers did Camp Kudzu have in 2015 alone?
  • Camp Kudzu had over 454 volunteers last year with 152 of them being medical volunteers!!
What is the farthest distance traveled by some our volunteers?
  • We have volunteers from as far away as: Modesto, CA - 2,393 miles from Atlanta, GA; Rowland Heights, CA - 2,159 miles; and Boston, MA - 1,001 miles from Atlanta, GA.

Building Your Resume - Volunteer at Camp!

A couple years ago, a camp expert* published an article explaining why employers LOVE to hire  camp counselors. We now that you who volunteer with us do so to make a difference in the lives of our children, we want you to know that others value your skills and experience!

Here's why "real world" managers put you on the top of their list to hire:
  1. A good communicator: Camp counselors have to be able to communicate well with children, parents, coworkers and superiors.
  2. A life-long learner: You are able to approach every situation in life with an "I want to learn more" attitude.
  3. A self-starter: While you are given very good supervision, no one is holding your hand every step of the way. You very quickly learn that YOU are the "go-to" person.
  4. Read 7 more reasons here!

If you have volunteered with Camp Kudzu and ever need a reference, please let someone in our office know. We love to brag on you!

Medical Corner:
That Gut Feeling

By: Carol Ann Brannon, MS RDN LD

(complete article here)

Is there is more to the nutritional care of T1 diabetes than carbohydrate counting and insulin dosing? Remember T1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease; therefore, increasing emphasis is being placed on nutrition strategies that target the underlying autoimmune "confusion."

More than 75 percent of the body's immune cells are located within the digestive tract or gut, which is also home to over 100 trillion diverse bacteria and flora. The gut flora is comprised of "friendly" bacteria, called probiotics, and "bad" bacteria that trigger inflammation and disease. Probiotics provide many health benefits including moderating inflammation, breaking down undigested short-chain carbohydrates, synthesizing vitamins, crowding out pathogenic bacteria, and producing beneficial short-chain fatty acids.

Emerging research indicates that children with T1 diabetes have lower numbers of probiotics, less diversity of species (different types), and higher gut impermeability compared to healthy children. Many factors influence the diversity and balance of the gut flora, but diet is perhaps the most important. I recommend a whole "real" food diet, low-fat and high-fiber. Here are some guidelines for the care of feeding of healthy gut flora:
  1. Choose fermented, probiotic-containing foods (such as yogurt).
  2. Enjoy foods rich in prebiotics, defined as non-digestible carbohydrates that serve as food for probiotics (read full article for examples or see photo above).
  3. Focus on Fiber.
  4. Enjoy healthy, omega-3 fats daily, like nuts and seeds.
  5. Avoid fried and high-fat foods, especially those containing animal fats.
  6. Shop the Perimeter of the Grocery Store.
  7. Choose organic produce, dairy foods, and meats whenever possible.
The good news as you can improve your gut flora and enjoy great health!
