Market Updates

That's right, all of our regions' early spring delights are in season and ready for yo u to find them at the Hollywood Farmers
Market this Saturday. Another reminder that market is now open from 8am-1p m, so early birds rejoice and get your far mers market worm!

Rejoining us for the season this week are ProFarm Produce laden with organic asparagus, and Fleur de Lis Bakery with all our favorite flaky pastries.
We also expect Columbia River Fish with fresh caught spring Chinook salmon, but Simon say the run has been slow so be sure to stop by early to get your catch.

In case you missed them last week, THINK Unique Gardens is back again with Suzanne's heirloom tomatoes, chili powders, jams and more.
Home Grown Food Products also returns, be sure to try their delicious lacto-fermented krauts and kim chi, with more offerings coming as the season changes.
Sweet Leaf Farm says to prepare for piles of sweet carrots (yay!), and Dragonfly Forge is now on an every-other-week schedule for the season, and they are in attendance this Saturday.

Looking for some gardening tips? The Master Gardeners will be at market this Saturday with an informational booth to help you with any gardening questions you might have.

The Hancock Street Mural Project continues to move forward, with plans for a street painting event sometime this summer . The project aims not only to beautify the farmers market, but also to unite the neighborhood community around the painting and to leave a reminder of the market on the street throughout the week. We are very excited about the project and hope that you will be too! The current draft design is below (sorry for the small size). If you are interested helping spread the word, recruit volunteers, draft a design, or complete the final painting email Sarah at HollywoodStreetPainting@gmail.com. Sarah will also have an informational table at the market this Saturday!

See you Saturday at the market!
Volunteer Orientation April 30th!
"Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in."
-- Unknown

volunteer guys Interested in volunteering at the Hollywood Farmers Market this season? Come out to our annual Volunteer Orientation on Saturday, April 30th from 11am to 12:30 pm, at the Rose City Park Presbyterian Church at 1907 NE 45th Ave.

The Hollywood Farmers Market wouldn't be possible without the help of its volunteers. Every Saturday it takes 20 to 25 volunteers to keep the market running smoothly. A few early-riser volunteers show up at 7 am to set up the market's equipment (canopies, umbrellas, tables, chairs, signage) before customers begin arriving. During the market, volunteers answer customers' questions, pass out fliers about upcoming market events, allow vendors working solo to take breaks, do crowd counts, and anything else that comes up during the course of a busy market. Then, at the end of the market, they take all our equipment down and repack our storage space. Volunteers enable our market to function and they make it fun!

Farmers markets are inherently social places. According to a Project for Public Spaces study, a customer has an average of 15-20 social interactions at a farmers market, versus 1-2 at a grocery store. And for volunteers, that number is much higher. Even for the setup and breakdown volunteers, who mainly just interact with each other, the camaraderie and sense of shared purpose is strong.

On Saturday mornings, the mood at the information booth (which is the home base for market volunteers) is warm and inviting. New volunteers are welcomed heartily and quickly absorbed into the community, and returning volunteers are greeted as old friends. Some of the volunteers are people I've known for years, and every Saturday the market is something we share with each other and with the neighborhood.

If you're interested in learning more about volunteering but can't make it to the orientation, no worries; contact me (Ari Rosner) at 503-803-7279 or send me an email at volunteers@hollywoodfarmersmarket.org and we can schedule you and orient you on market day!

See you at the market!
