Psychotherapy Groups For Men

June-July ENewsletter

Dear Colleagues,

I hope this note finds you well as we ease into summer. The main focus of this newsletter is an offering of concrete strategies to create, plan and implement brief workshops. Early in my career (the year was 1987) I was pleased to be asked to present a workshop reflecting HIV hospital work for a group of gay men who were not only very interested but highly impacted. It was pretty clear the presentation was mediocre, and a bit embarrassing for me. Since then I have developed a more engaging and informative style of presenting and have been fortunate to have a lot of experience doing so. I've also become keenly aware of what tends not to engage workshop attendees.

If you are interested in this topic I'll be leading a two hour, no cost workshop on July 19th in Redwood City as part of my seminar series, Everything You Wanted to Know About Groups But Are Afraid To Ask. I hope to see some of you there!

Warm Regards,

Jamie Moran

How to Prepare and Implement a Successful Brief Workshop

This article reflects a brief overview of practical workshop suggestions, focused on three primary areas.

Introduction/Preparation

  • Be familiar with your topic but don't assume you need to be the "expert."
  • Create a clear and concise outline that you can follow with ease.
  • Practice your talk (while alone or in front of a trusted friend/colleague).
  • Creating handouts are essential, preferably on your letterhead. Pay attention to layout, font size, and general attractiveness of any materials provided.

Workshop Material/ The Main Part

  • Try not to prepare too much material. A one hour workshop allows for one or two major points at most.
  • Welcome your attendees and make them comfortable as they arrive.
  • Do your best not to rush through in an attempt to cover everything.
  • Having a variety of approaches/learning techniques helps attendees feel more engaged. Some examples include dyads, small and large group discussions, role plays, demonstration groups and audio and visual aids as well as written exercises.
  • Introductions of participants should be brief in a short workshop.
  • Experiment with interesting, humorous, or thought provoking introductions. Most participants will appreciate not having to experience the same old introduction format. Humor in general is a helpful mode to weave throughout a workshop.
  • If the workshop is longer than 90 minutes, ask for feedback mid-way:  "Are you finding this helpful?"

Conclusion/Summary

  • Towards the end, briefly summarize your main points.
  • Depending on the topic, make suggestions for "further study" or follow up, which underscores the value of your presentation and the topic itself.
  • Provide time at the end for attendees to complete an evaluation. Written format is easiest and protects (more or less) confidentiality. Evaluations are required if CEUs are offered.
  • Work towards being comfortable with critique and welcome differing points of view.
  • Allow for questions, especially at the end. Some presenters don't mind questions throughout a presentation. Consider saying as appropriate: "I don't know but I'll find out" (Alternatively, "I don't know but what would you say?"). In larger, lengthier workshops, keep a list of questions and promise to follow up in an email.

Everything You Wanted To Know About Groups But Are Afraid To Ask!

I continue to offer an ongoing free workshop series pertaining to group issues for clinicians. Therapists, interns and students are welcome to attend. Workshops take place in San Francisco and on the Peninsula. Seminars meet qualifications for continuing education credits for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs as required by the BBS. Number of credits is equal to workshop length. A $10 fee applies for those seeking certification.
