YMCA OF WASHINGTON COUNTY
January 27 2016

MESSAGE FROM CEO: Becky Harkema
On New Year's Day I was with friends and we were talking about New Year's Resolutions. Many of the resolutions were about improving health; i.e. exercising more, eating better, losing weight. And then we began discussing the importance of emotional health and how the YMCA can help with this area. The YMCA brings opportunities for individuals to meet new friends, spend time with family, be in a safe environment and grow together. The YMCA of Washington County certainly provides all of these aspects, particularly since the YMCA has provided me an extended family.  It is so wonderful to work for the YMCA and be involved in many opportunities. Below are three topics that are occurring soon!

WASHINGTON COMMUNITY YMCA's Capital Campaign. . .

is progressing nicely. We are just under $6 million and have received an invitation to present to Vision Iowa on February 10th . We are opening the campaign to everyone. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause please contact me. I will also be hosting community forums about the project on:
Thursday, February 11 @ 5:30pm
Wednesday, February 17 @ 6:00pm
Saturday, February 20 @ 10:00am
Monday, March 14 @ 12noon
Wednesday, March 23 @ 5:00pm
Tuesday, April 26 @12noon

All these forums will be held at the Washington Community YMCA.

SUMMER SWIM POOL (Columbus Junction). . .

This summer we will be operating the Columbus Junction outdoor pool. I am extremely excited about this opportunity. It has been great to work with the Columbus Junction School District and the City of Columbus Junction officials. Come and see us at the pool!
CITY OF KALONA . . .
will be doing a bond vote for a $4 million addition to the Kalona Rec Center.  The addition will include a full-size gymnasium, indoor walking track, exercise space , fitness class rooms, locker rooms and a lobby. Below is video that shows more information.  Future of the Kalona Community Center

On Saturday, January 9 I took these pictures at the Washington Community YMCA. It is so wonderful to see all the YMCA facilities busy with participants!

An interesting tidbit: We had 89,901 scanned membership cards in 2015!

Our Mission

To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Our Cause

At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That's why we focus our work in three areas: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
