San Antonio Poet Laureate Laurie Ann Guerrero speaks at the opening of the San Antonio Poetry Archive at Alamo Colleges - Palo Alto College.

Poetry Archive at Alamo Colleges - Palo Alto College Opens
to the Community

Alamo Colleges - Palo Alto College (PAC), the City of San Antonio Department for Culture & Creative  Development, and 2014-2016 San Antonio Poet Laureate Laurie Ann Guerrero opened  the official San Antonio Poetry Archive in the Ozuna Library at PAC recently  and revealed a mural celebrating the archive.

Guerrero, a former PAC student and 2014 recipient of the College's Outstanding Former  Student award, has served as San Antonio's Poet Laureate since 2014. As part of her tenure, Guerrero  designed a scope of work and partnered with Palo Alto College to create a repository of written and audio- visual materials and artifacts that tells the stories of local poets and the history of San Antonio's diverse literary  voice.

The San Antonio Poetry Archive project consisted of two elements. The first involved a  team of PAC students, led by Dr. Rafael Castillo, professor of English, who conducted interviews  with noted local poets and solicited donations of personal works for the a rchive. The interviews and works will be on display in the Ozuna Library and rotated on a  monthly basis.

For the second element, ceramics and sculpture students, led by Associate Professor  Cakky Brawley, created a permanent mural that illustrates the power of poetry. The  construction of the massive ceramic mural, which is nearly twelve feet long and six feet high, was supported by  a grant from the city's Department for Culture & Creative Development.

The archive will be open to the public by appointment.  For information on how to donate personal works to the archive, contact the Ozuna Library at 210-486-3575.
