to Mills Canyon where good things are happening!

This past month, the City commenced work on the Mills Canyon trail. To date, work completed includes: rebuilding retaining walls, improving drainage, repairs to the trail and steps, and the addition of rocks in areas to provide better drainage and transition of roots. This work marks the beginning of a multi-year project to improve Mills Canyon and allow for greater ease of access to this local treasure. Pictures of some completed work can be found here.

dispatchersThis Week is 911 Dispatchers Week
The City of Burlingame thanks our public safety dispatchers for their service!

Each year, the second week of April is dedicated to the women and men who serve as public safety 911 dispatchers. The City of Burlingame is proud to recognize the women and men of the Burlingame Police Department Dispatch Center during National Dispatchers Week. See pictures of our dispatchers on our Facebook page. Like us on Facebook

Many take for granted the service provided by dispatchers who are the true "first responders" to a citizen's call for help. These professionals are not only the calm voice to citizens, but also to firefighters and police officers faced with life and death decisions on the street. For the team of dispatchers who work at the Burlingame Police Department, their work is essential to saving lives and property. The skills, knowledge, and dedication each dispatcher exhibits while assisting the public deserves recognition not only during this week of celebration, but throughout the year.
progressProgress Update
Police station landscaping renovation

New hardscape features, including winding pathways and geometric designs, are shaping the Police Station's landscaping renovation. The City's Parks crew installed large rocks repurposed from a local business landscape remodeling project, constructed pathways from decomposed granite, and used recycled plastic bender board and recycled crushed concrete for the hardscape features.

Next up, the crew will continue to remove sod, complete the hardscape, and install water efficient irrigation.

Water efficient irrigation uses drip and sprinkler nozzles that use significantly less water than conventional irrigation systems. Learn more about how to install water efficient irrigation at an upcoming City sponsored workshop. See the details in the "Events Around Town" section below!
conservationWater Conservation Update
Both City and State make progress!

Since the implementation of the Water Conservation Mandate by the Governor in June 2015, the City of Burlingame has reduced water consumption by 29% - nearly double the 16% reduction  mandated for the City.  At the state level, Californians have conserved approximately 24% water throughout the state from June 2015 through February 2016, close to the 25% required by Governor Edmund G. Brown's water conservation mandate .  This resulted in 1.19 million acre-feet of water being conserved, which is enough to supply water to 5.9 million state residents for a year!  Although the Sierra snowpack  is at 97% of normal, a significant improvement from last year , the Governor has extended  the mandate until October 2016 to improve the State's long-term water needs. The State Water Board is holding a public workshop  on April 20 for input regarding the conservation mandate.  Meanwhile, please remember to conserve water during the upcoming dry months.  Limit irrigation, mulch planting beds and visit a car wash facility that recycles water.  For more information, click here.
highwayState Highway System Bike Map
Covering 9 Bay Area counties

Caltrans is developing a District 4 Bike Map, which covers the State Highway System within the nine Bay Area counties. The District 4 Bike Map shows which state routes are available to bicyclists and, for freeways or sections thereof where bicycling is prohibited, an alternate route available to bicyclists. The public draft map  is now available for local agencies, stakeholders, and the public to review and provide feedback. Caltrans District 4 is asking for input on accuracy and selection of alternate routes identified (where bicycling is prohibited on a state route) and general map usability and features. Comments or questions may be sent to Sergio Ruiz with Caltrans at sergio.ruiz@dot.ca.gov . The public draft map is accessible  here .

earthdayEarth Day is April 22
Take action and celebrate your planet

Since its inception on April 22, 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated in over 193 countries to celebrate and demonstrate support for environmental protection.  Earth Day is upon us again, and it is a reminder that each one of us can do a little (or a lot!) to take care of our shared environment.  Please keep the following tips in mind as small steps in which we can all take part:
  • Use non-toxic household products.
  • Visit the Environmental Working Group's helpful database.
  • Store and dispose of household paint and chemicals appropriately.
  • Drop off at a hazardous waste facility, or call to set up a curbside pickup
  • Always pick up your pet's waste (or a fellow owner's), and throw the bagged waste in the trash (not the compost!).
  • Never litter, and dispose of trash properly.  Help keep it out of our Bay and oceans.
  • Take your car to an oil change facility, or if a DIYer, dispose of oil appropriately.
  • For more information, visit Flowstobay.org
