Junior Retreat this weekend!
Hargrave Parent eNewsletter
"My definition of a leader . . . is a man who can persuade people to do what they don't want to do, or do what they're too lazy to do, and like it. "
-- Harry Truman
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

2016 Junior Retreat
Hargrave juniors in a team building exercise.

The Juniors had a great time this weekend. Junior Retreat was a big hit even with some frigid temperatures. The young men competed in dodge ball, paintball, a swimming pool version of Battleship and a number of team building exercises. They were ready for a nice, slow Sunday afternoon after they returned (read that as sleeping). The Class of 2017 is looking very strong for the 2016-2017 Academic year. I look forward to their assuming the mantle of leadership.

A number of faculty and staff supported the Junior Retreat. Coach Ben Paris led the event. He was supported by Mrs. Dena Olsen, CPT Aaron Marshall, Coach Brandon Owen, CPT Justin Ebelt and CPT Brian Davis with planning and execution. MAJ Scott Roach and LTC Walter Sullivan manned the grill for Friday night's steak dinner. Ms. Mingyue Jiang and Mrs. Danielle Barr provided some great S'Mores. MAJ Tim and Jennifer Oditt ensured a fun, safe dodge ball tournament. Additional thanks goes to SgtMaj. Harold Hofer, Coach Jeremy Eubank, Coach William Eberly and Mrs. Kerry Watts. Great job!

This coming weekend the sophomores take their turn with the Sophomore Challenge. The event starts on April 16 and will test our sophomores' maturity and leadership ability. While seniors lead the Corps of Cadets, it's the future juniors that run the Corps of Cadets. Our sophomores will soon learn that it's the Non-Commissioned Officers, the juniors, that make things happen.

Next weekend, 22-24 April, is Alumni Weekend! I expect we will have somewhere close to 500 visitors on campus during the weekend. I encourage parents to attend! The alumni will gather to relive 'old times', see the campus, have fun and talk to Cadets. It's on our annual calendar as a "Special Weekend"--that means no passes. All Cadets are expected to be here.

Taguba
Taguba
I'm excited about the arrival of Major General Anthony Taguba (USA, Retired) on 29 April as our Spring 2016 Distinguished Speaker! Hargrave Corps of Cadets will meet a gentleman who served the Nation for 34 years with honor and distinction. Also, a man whose integrity and moral courage I would like them to emulate.

In 2004, MG Taguba was the Deputy Commanding General for Support, Coalition Forces Land Component Command(CFLCC)/Third U.S. Army in Kuwait. During this assignment he was responsible for providing support for the large buildup of combat forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was during this assignment that MG Taguba was assigned to be the investigating officer for the abuse of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

MG Taguba will address the Corps of Cadets at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 28, 2016. Parents and family are welcomed--and encourage-- to attend. More about MG Taguba and the event follows.

Maintaining standards is a focus of the Hargrave Military Department. Now that the Corps of Cadets is focused forward toward the end of the school year and with very busy schedules, attention to detail can slip. The Cadet Battalion Staff and Company leadership are expected to maintain standards throughout the end of the year. This is a challenge, and one I know they will meet.

Best regards,

Don Broome

Special Olympic racing events.

Members of Hargrave's National Beta Club participated in a service event with the Danville Special Olympics (Area 7 Special Olympics VA Track and Field Meet) on Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Members supported the event by timing races, managing events and providing manpower for the event staff.

Mrs. Donna Cooper and Mrs. Trish Martin chaperoned the Cadets as Beta Club faculty sponsors. The following 'Thank You' came from Mr. Gary Uitto, the Meet Director.

"Your HMA BETA Club members exceeded my high expectations volunteering at the Special Olympics Meet today.

"The finish line stopwatch operators worked accurately and smoothly with the score card writer. The scorecard runners did not run, they sprinted, even for the afternoon events. The track events were planned to fill 30 minute periods. You worked so efficiently that the scheduled races were done in 15 minutes repeatedly.

"The other members were at a Ball Throwing court, the Jump pit and an awards table. They all did their tasks well and with a minimum of instruction. They were close to self directing.

"Every year HMA provides some of the best volunteers for this Meet. I hope they continue to build their fine tradition at the 2017 Special Olympics Meet. I hope to see you then."

It was a beautiful day for the competition, which made a great day to serve. The following Cadets supported the effort:

Lee recently achieved a 100% college acceptance rate for Hargrave's Class of 2016. With time still left in the academic year and with a large number of Class of 2016 members earning two or more acceptances, Lee has done a remarkable job in College Placement.

"Thank you for all of the work you do with students and preparing them for college!"

Student Activities

On Friday, April 8, 2016, the Junior Retreat began on campus. With activities going late into the evening, the juniors would be up early on Saturday morning for an overnight trip to Camp Pitt. Team building, contests, camaraderie and great food highlighted the day. A warm breakfast and a trip back to barracks Sunday morning ended a great weekend for Hargrave juniors.

On Saturday, April 9, 2016, LTC Joe Merricks and Mrs. Kneyokee Shelton took the Cadets to see "Batman vs. Superman" and a CiCi's Pizza buffet. The Cadets raved that the movie was action packed and look forward to what happens next in the series.

Mrs. Debra Pugh and Ms. Darlene Paton took the Cadets to the Chatham Hall Formal on Saturday night. With an excellent dinner and an awesome band, the Cadets enjoyed a great evening across town.

When it come to deciding on your gift to Hargrave, please know that those $10, $25, $50 and $100 gifts do add up and do help a tremendous amount!

Why Give?
The boarding school landscape has changed a lot over the past 10 plus years. There are more and more smaller academies that have been started which means it's a much more competitive market.

With that being said, IGTH allows Hargrave to hire and keep the best faculty, staff and coaches. Your support is needed more than ever!

Our goal is to raise participation in all constituencies within the Hargrave family, ultimately reaching 1,000 donors for the Academy's fiscal year ending May 31. That will be a 100% increase from the year before but less than our all time high of 1,600 donors. To make a gift you can go to the link below.
