Winston's Corner

Greetings Everyone, you may know me 'WINSTON' , the official mascot of the Humane Society of Rome.  I also have a weekly column in the Rome Sentinel Seven Day Sentinel Edition, 'WINSTON'S PET PERSONALS', showcasing shelter animals up for adoption.  This very popular column has been running since 1999 and has generated hundreds of adoptions.

In our quarterly newsletter I will be giving updates on adoption success stories. If you have a story that you feel we should spotlight please use the link below.

Pet Therapy

On Monday, April 11, 2016 "Chewy" accompanied by two staff members, Sara and Allison, they visited Heritage Healthcare Center in Utica.  "Chewy" was on his best behavior while visiting with residents at the center.  He sat patiently for many head pats and wagged his tail with excitement for the love that he was given.  He gave licks and kisses to the residents while Sara and Allison answered questions regarding his age, breed and name.  Many of the residents were so happy to see a furry friend and even shared stories of the dogs they had at home.  As we left you could see the happy smiles on their faces and know that we touched a special place in the hearts of all.

What is Pet Therapy? A HSR representative travel to local nursing home facilities and bring shelter pets for visitation to help improve a resident's social, emotional, or cognitive functioning.  For more information call the Shelter Manager at 315-337-1434.

Employee Spotlight
Helene Rudiak, Shelter Manager

"As shelter manager I'm look forward to helping find good, loving homes for all our animals, and helping people who can no longer take care of their animals on their own - that they know they have somewhere to go that's making sure their cats and dogs are cared for and will be met with love, tenderness and care. We have a wonderful staff and it's just amazing the love they show for all the animals."

Before coming to the Humane Society of Rome, Rudiak garnered more than 20 years managerial experience, first in the claims department at BlueCross BlueShield and through the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse as operations manager for Rome Catholic Schools.

If you know an employee or volunteer that should be recognized in our SPOTLIGHT column use the link below to submit a story.
