Dear Members:

As we move into the second quarter of 2016, it's good to take a look at what we've accomplished so far this year. In the environment, you need not look far for disruption. We've seen a full range of interesting news including market volatility, election entertainment, international terrorism and historic regulation for our industry. As I said earlier in the year, our profession is one of constant challenge and opportunity.

With all these brewing stories happening in the background, you can rely on your local FPA chapter to provide you with a diverse set of opportunities to continue providing value to your clients and growing as a professional. So far in 2016, we had the privilege of seeing the following notable speakers and topics at our meetings: Dan Staszak, MS, CPA with an always-relevant tax update, John Madden, JD, speaking about divorce with CalPERS clients, Larry Burkhardt, CEcD, Director of Economic Development, outlining the state of Sacramento's economy and, most recently, Joe Moklebust, CRPC®, updating us on the recent social security reform. In addition, we enjoyed fun times at a Thirsty Thursday at Hot Italian and a NextGen mixer at Hook and Ladder. It's been a real pleasure watching you leverage these forums for networking and education. Continue reading here

Welcome New Co-Directors of Sponsorship
At the March meeting, former Past President, Paul Meyerhoff and Chapter Sponsor, Launi Cooper were voted in as Co-Directors of Sponsorship. Both Paul and Launi bring a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to the board which make them great additions!   If you have a sponsorship lead that you would like for them to contact, please reach out to either one as it will be appreciated.

FPA NorCal Conference is Almost Sold Out! RSVP Today!

There are a couple of conferences that I look forward to all year. At the top of the list is the FPA NorCal conference held in San Francisco each year at the Palace Hotel. This year's conference will be held on Tuesday, May 31 and Wednesday, June 1st. If you haven't registered yet, you missed the March 4 th cutoff for Early Bird pricing. However, as long as you register by April 29th, you can still qualify for Advance Pricing before the price rises again to the Regular pricing.

I look forward to the excellent lineup of keynote speakers and breakout sessions. I'm confident that the conference will be beneficial to my practice as well as personal development. I hope to see you there.

FPA NorCal and the Sacramento Estate Planning Council held a joint mixer at Hot Italian on February 4, 2016.  There were approximately 25 people in attendance throughout the evening.  The mixer was a great opportunity for members of both organizations to mingle and get to know each other.  If you are interested in learning more about the Sacramento Estate Planning Council, please visit their website at www.sacepc.org.

The social committee is currently planning the next mixer, so stay tuned for more details.

I just wanted to inform you that I attended the CSUS Student Kick Off Meeting on February 18th and it was a huge success. We actually ran out of sitting room because there were easily 55+ students present. Yen Truong did an awesome job presenting the benefits of the FPA of Northern California and the FPA Student Chapter. The great thing is that it looks like a lot of students have an interest and wanted to be a part of the chapter outside of the student association. Congratulations Yen on a job well done at the Kick Off Meeting! See pics below. :)

First Offsite Chapter Meeting of 2016 Was a Success!

Wow! What an impressive turnout we had for our first offsite meeting of 2016 at McCormick & Schmick's. We appreciate Principal Funds sponsoring part of the event and providing a top-notch speaker. If you were there, I am sure you felt the energy that was buzzing around. It was great to see a lot of familiar faces as well as some new ones. I continue to be impressed by the liveliness that takes place not only in our board meetings, but from our members and monthly meetings as well. The success of this event goes to show that with a change of scenery, good food, ample networking time and a pertinent topic, we can really shake things up within our chapter and take our meetings to the next level.

I hope the first quarter of 2016 has been a great one for you.  To all of you who have donated your time and efforts in a pro bono or volunteer capacity this year, we thank you!  Offering pro bono services is an important aspect of growing the profession.

We have a few things to update you on:

First, the Rosemont Financial Literacy project has had 3 successful sessions covering Debt/Credit/Budgeting, Tax Planning, and Education Planning. Thank you to Dusty Hoetger, Scott Draper, Jenny Hood and Taylor Rios for providing great presentations. And thank you to Terry with the Rosemont Community Association for getting it off the ground! The fourth session is scheduled for Wednesday, April 28th, on Buying a Home & Mortgage Planning, presented by Launi Cooper (thank you!)

Second, if you are interested in helping students develop their career ambitions, there are a number of opportunities to volunteer with Junior Achievement. This is a great way to share your career journey and professional successes with teenagers who are trying to chart their own life paths. And we know our members have great stories to share with these kids!  Contact Jenny Hood for details. Continue reading here

The first quarter of the year has seemed to have flown by! We have had some great programs so far this year: a tax update, how to properly evaluate a pension when clients are going through a divorce and an economic update on our great city of Sacramento. I have enjoyed seeing the many faces at our meetings each month. On April 8 th, we had our first offsite meeting of the year covering the pertinent topic of Social Security at a great venue, McCormick & Schmick's in Roseville.

Looking forward, we have lots of other great programming coming up. May will be an estate planning update and in June we will learn about how to make our practices more efficient and profitable.

I appreciate everyone who has given me a program idea for our group. Because of the great wealth of resources and connections within our community, our 2016 calendar is already booked for the year! I plan to start booking the 2017 calendar around August. Continue reading here
