A Message from Vicki Fox
Vicki August 2014
Dear Women of Intention:

Happy Spring.   How enlivening to see the beautiful colors of the flowers and new green growth. Mother Nature's last hurrah of snow on April 8th makes returning to warmer weather all the more sweet.

Monday, May 16th's WOI will be featuring another amazing ordinary woman who is making an extraordinary difference.   Amy Benson  is a documentary filmmaker from Seattle, Washington who comes to us via Suzanne Grenager, who last saw Amy 35 years ago.  We are the lucky recipients of Amy's program because of Amy's mom's desire to visit with Suzanne. Thank you, Suzanne, for thinking of us.

Amy, usually a storyteller of other's lives, will be sharing her own journey.  As often happens through unexpected circumstances, Amy's newest passion and calling found her. She will speak of how her film assignment in Nepal, which was to follow one young woman as she left her rural home town and was educated in Kathmandu, has grown to Amy spearheading a change in the way western groups who are providing educational opportunities for these young girls will now include a stronger component of emotional support that was not present during Amy's filming.

In addition to our Monday WOI event, there will be a showing of Amy's award winning film Drawing the Tiger on Wednesday, May 18th at the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg and additional showings at possibly one or two more locations that week.

I am certain many of you know and remember Robin Rice, a presenter at WOI quite a few times over the years.  At a low point in my life, when things seemed to be falling apart, Robin sent me a beautifully written letter inspiring me to trust that my passion would return.  For those of you who are in transition and wondering where to go next, here is what she sent me which gave me comfort, Looking back, these wise words are very true.

They say that muscles have memory.  You, back in this true place for you, of course it is happening quickly.  It's a dam that has been holding water.  Did you really think that by leaving certain aspects of your passions, your passions would leave you? It doesn't work that way. They are more faithful than you can imagine.  So now you return, it returns, and you come together powerfully.  Enjoy the trust that comes from knowing that what you want, still wants you too!  ~ Robin Rice

Part of the message in Amy's journey I believe has to do with by following your heart, being open and trusting, your passion will find you.  And when it does, we all know and have seen how you can move mountains.

Looking forward to seeing you Monday, May 16th. Please read below to learn more about Amy, watch the trailer of Drawing The Tiger and  make sure to click on the link to Amy's TED Talk.  Please share this evening with friends.  It is going to be extraordinary.

Blessings,
Vicki

Women of Intention:
  • When I speak to women who are up to big things in the world, I often hear, "If anyone had told me five years ago this is what I would be doing now, I would have said: Not me, you've got to be kidding."
  • Could following your heart and being open to what the universe presents be the key to living the life you were meant to lead?
  • Is it possible that behind tragedy there is a blessing, a bigger message and a contribution one can make to the world?
Join us Monday, May 16, 2016 as award-winning documentary filmmaker Amy Benson, often a storyteller for others, shares the fascinating story of how her own life is unfolding.  A former educator of middle school girls, Amy became a filmmaker and in 2008 was hired to produce a promotional video for a nonprofit providing scholarships for girls in Nepal.

What became a seven year assignment, which began with following one student's life, forever changed Amy's, expanding her focus and her mission.

Because of an unexpected, very dramatic development during production, the film almost got scrapped. Instead, Amy and her husband co-producer Scott Squire decided to move forward and tell an entirely different story, rife with powerful implications for all of us who want to make a difference in the Third World.   "Drawing the Tiger," about their experience in Nepal, debuted at the 2015 premier documentary Hotdocs Fest in Toronto and has since been shown at many festivals around the world. Most recently, it received First Place at the recent CAAM Film Festival in San Francisco. CAAM described the film this way: "Drawing the Tiger" is a stunning and haunting work of cinema that immerses viewers in the lives of a rural Nepali family as they support each other to dream and work for a better amidst circumstances that challenge them to maintain hope."  Along with my friend Suzanne Grenager (who has known Amy since they both lived in Egypt)

Drawing the Tiger will be shown Wednesday night, May 16th, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg, 1280 Clover Lane, Harrisburg, PA. The showing of the film will be followed with a Q & A session with Amy Benson.   Suggested Donation: $10.00. For more details, contact the UU Church at 717-564-4761.

** $10.00 of each ticket will be donated
to Amy for her mission in Nepal
