Hosanna E-Update

April 12, 2016
We are called, gathered and sent to be a people living, loving
and serving as Jesus did so that all may know Him.
From Pastor Linda

Law vs. Gospel - God's WORD for YOU

ll scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching,
for reproof, for correction, and for training in
righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God
may be proficient, equipped for every good work.
~From 2Timothy 3

Dear Friends~
I write to you today from AZ- yes, sitting at a Starbucks. I am taking some time away to consider our direction for the summer and set out a worship plan for those beautiful Summer Sunday's at Lakeside Park! I look forward to returning to be with you this Sunday as we continue to explore: Saint & Sinner- living like a Lutheran!

On Sunday we will explore the WORD of God and consider the lens that we view scripture through as Christians who are Lutheran. We all have one, don't we? A pair of glasses that we read through, and through those same glasses we view the world.

As Lutherans our theology, our understanding of God, is GRACE-shaped. Pastor Jen spoke about this last Sunday. This GRACE also extends to our reading of Scripture- God's Word. As Lutherans we read Scripture to point to a loving God. We read, both the Old and New Testament, with Gospel glasses: "Because God has done this for us therefore we have the opportunity to..." . This in comparison to the Law which says "If you do this then God will do that." Gospel reading is filled with promise and possibility. Law is filled with should's and must's.

I think this also informs our relationship with God. If we imagine God primarily as an enforcer of rules, then we can get hung up by the legalism of religion. If we visualize God as stern and prone to punishment, then we might come to believe that everything bad in our lives is punishment from God. If, on the other hand, we view God primarily in terms of grace and gospel, we are surprised and uplifted by the numerous gifts and moments of grace we experience all around us. And then, when we imagine God to be a God of love, we find it far easier to experience God's love in our own lives and to share it with others.

The Word of God is transformative. God's Word equips us for every good work. Thanks be to God!

I can hardly wait to see you on Sunday! I have missed you!!
  ~ Pastor Linda
