Welcome to Business Talk

Welcome to BUSINESS TALK, the City of Marion newsletter that provides a monthly snapshot of what's happening in your business community.

Business success is essential to the future of the City of Marion as a place to live, learn, work and invest. This month we want to promote discussion of the role of Intellectual Property (IP) in encouraging innovation and creativity.

We value your feedback and encourage you to get in touch with us .

World Intellectual Property Day - 26 April

World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated every 26 April - the day the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) Convention came into force in 1970. The day is designed to promote discussion of the role of intellectual property in encouraging innovation and creativity. The aim is to raise the awareness and help people gain more information.

This year's World Intellectual Property Day focuses on "Digital Creativity: Culture Reimagined". Cultural works including a film, TV, music and books have long crossed borders. The Wi-Fi era is transforming how consumable culture is created, distributed and enjoyed in markets that are expanding beyond national borders. Accessible digital technologies have removed physical constraints, which is feeding the imagination of artists and creators. For the consumer, the work of creators and artists is easily accessible as we read, watch and listen to works from across the world, wherever, whenever and however we want.

Reimagining culture - how we create, access and finance IP - has its challenges. The challenge of the intellectual property system is to ensure that artists and creative industries can be properly paid for their work so they can and will keep creating.

This is an important time of the year to think about your IP.

Global expert presents the 4th Industrial Revolution at Tonsley

More than 100 industry stakeholders attended an event in the new State Drill Core Reference Library at Tonsley earlier this month.  Titled "Retooling the nation for a 4th industrial revolution", the event featured a presentation from President and CEO of Siemens' PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) Software from the United States, Mr Chuck Grindstaff, and a panel discussion with the Australian CEO of German submarine builder TKMS, the CEO of Tonsley based Simulation Australasia John Stewart, and Professor John Spoehr , Director of the Australian Industrial Transformation Institute also based at Tonsley.

The 4th Industrial Revolution, also known as "Industry 4.0", is a means of increasing the competitiveness of manufacturing industries by increasing the integration of "cyber-physical systems" into factory processes - or the ability to mass produce highly customisable products using an integration of smart, internet-connected machines and human labour, while still retaining a high degree of efficiency. PLM software is a type of modelling and simulation tool used for advanced design and analysis.

In November last year, through a partnership between Siemens, Simulation Australasia and State Government, a PLM software training facility, 'SimLab' was established in South Australia to deliver training. Over three years, SimLab will deliver the PLM software training to at least 36 South Australian companies and nine South Australian universities and/or educational organisations.

Simulation Australasia can be contacted via   www.simulationaustralia.com  or on telephone 08 8223 4888.
