It's not your father's Catholic Schools Week!

If you attended the 10 am mass last Sunday, you know it is Catholic Schools Week. This year's theme is Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service, which captures so much of what St. Josaphat School is all about! The school is not only a mission of our parish, but a beacon of faith, knowledge and service in our local community.

We are grateful to all who have supported Catholic education this year here at St. Josaphat, as well as throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago and our nation. It is by the sacrifice of our forebears that many of our leaders today are Catholics. The firm foundation in the Catholic tradition makes a profound difference in the lives of so many people.

According to many students, celebrating Catholic Schools makes it the most fun of the school year! Jen Miller, SJS parent, commented, "This is a lot more fun than when I was in school!" The week kicked off with School Spirit Day, where students decorated a hawk (the SJS mascot) on their classroom doors. Ms. Egan's Kindergarten, Ms. Hohman's 2nd Grade and the 7th Grade won their respective divisions.

Another favorite activity was "Soup"er Hero Day. Students dressed as their favorite superheros (Captain America, Batman and Superman were the most popular), and brought in soup to share with the homeless. Impromptu dance breaks peppered the day, and First Grader Michael Luick particularly enjoyed the song "Happy."

Friday, the week caps off with a Teacher Appreciation Breakfast sponsored by the PTO and the annual Faculty vs. 8th Grade Volleyball Match. The 8th Graders won for the first time last year; will this year be a repeat? 8th Graders Zach Anderson and Charlie Wagner don't think they're a match for the faculty this year... we'll see!

Our parish, faculty, parents and students have so many things to be thankful for at St. Josaphat School, and as Debbie Dennis says, "We are so blessed to have a reason to celebrate during this mid-winter week!"
