A NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDER

Where are those April showers? I need my car washed and we all know LA needs all the rain we can get. Aside from that, business is good and there are so many opportunities. Between film and tv we keep marching or working forward. Also finding new markets to consider as well.

As the year starts it second quarter we are hustling to stay up with all the activity. This is all good with the excitement in the air of mergers, presidential contenders new projects, time is just flying by.

At TNG, we are developing more techniques in relation to 3D scanning to give you better models. We are getting deeper into developing cars and products to expand our markets with our high-tech scanners, skilled modelers, and our mobility.

We are always researching new technology and software to keep the quality of our service at the highest level, and to accelerate our pipeline. We do our best to provide a great product to our customers.

We continue our search for partners who are synergistic to our service. Together we can help our customers save more while using better products.  Contact us

CHARACTER 3D SCANNING
Avoid the Valley of the Dolls

It's not hard to end up in the Uncanny Valley on the road to building 3D characters for games, TV, or films. Many of us have had the misfortune of visiting this place and having our characters call it 'home'.

Janelle - Geisha scaled

What is the first tell-tale sign that your character is a resident? Look into their eyes. If it looks like they are cold and not alive, then they are from the Valley. This is the area that requires the most attention, because it will give your character the life you had intended - or the death you never expected.

People inform each other with their eyes, brows, and forehead. We can see joy, sadness, anger, plus all the other emotions used on a daily basis . We have this reference around us nearly the entire time we are awake, even if we are just looking in a mirror. Therefore when we see the photo-realistic model , we see/feel it right away.

If you're an artist the best way to combat this syndrome is to have others evaluate your work and discuss it. You do not want to work in a vacuum. Your fellow colleagues will be happy to offer a different perspective on how to give it a more convincing look of life.

ENVIRONMENTAL 3D SCANNING

Lidar Scanning on Site

Ever run into a problem having all of your small objects scanned alongside whole environments? Now most companies can do both. The convenient part is not having to juggle various vendors, plus you can likely negotiate a better price.

Lidar scans can go to work right away in pre-visualization. They can then be built as more of a solid or fully surfaced quad mesh for better final models. You can have both the interior and exterior of the building scanned.

The digital assets give you and the director much more flexibility to manipulate shots, change shots or just add more people, action or even just to redo it with a clean start. Take for instance, the effect of crashing a car into a wall. If the action looks weak, or perhaps the car was too expensive to destroy in real life, the director could redo it several times until he got the action he was looking for.

VIRTUAL REALITY
     Virtual Reality is Here

Virtual Reality is here. The Occulus Rift launched March 28th, 2016, the HTC Vive launched April 5th, 2016, and the Playstation VR appears to be slated for Halloween (October 31st, 2016). Referred to as a head-mounted display (HMD), it is still unclear to many people as to what VR can offer. Let's take a look.

As early as 1995, Virtual Boy by Nintendo was marketed as a type of 'virtual reality'. It had a sort of headset attached to a stand. The display was red and black only, and gave you a sort of 3D effect, but induced headaches, and was a commercial failure.

The Wii console system came out in 2006, and is a success with over 100 million units sold, making it the fifth best-selling console. The Wii introduced motion tracking - its controller could detect movement in three dimensions. The graphics were crude, but gameplay and games developed for a casual audience were the aim rather than cutting-edge graphics, which call for more expensive hardware. This roundup of modern day VR helmets appear to be our generation's type of 'Wii' system - albeit a few steps forward.

The Kinect by Microsoft had its version of motion tracking. In 2010 it came out, and allowed for the user to control and interact with the console without using a controller, and instead could use gestures and voice commands. It sold 8 million units in its first 60 days on the market.

The headset VRs of 2016 (Occulus Rift, PS VR, HTC Vive) bring both head tracking, and an immersive headset. This technology is a big jump for all kinds of visual media. A direct comparison can be drawn to 'headphones'. Instead of immersing a user with just sound, we can immerse a user with video. This has been deemed the 'cinematic experience'. Imagine laying on your back, drifting to sleep while being able to watch any type of movie or TV show within a contained headset that lets you look in any direction and still perfectly see the screen.

So notice how this is our introduction to VR. I think it's important to envision the current technology's potential. We can't just swiftly transition from using a standard gaming controller and watching a regular TV to Matrix-style virtual reality, where you're wondering, "If I die in the matrix; do I die in real life?"

The technology must go through consumer-ready prototypes. The resolution in the VR helmets will improve, which makes the world more believable. The CPU components and video card will be able to handle both the graphics and the VR capabilities simultaneously - whereas in 2016 those two things seem to be at odds.
