Oak wilt versus bur oak blight: join us online March 24
Oak wilt is old news but still newsworthy. This destructive invasive's range extends over nearly half of Minnesota's land and occurs on highly susceptible species. Bur oak blight is relatively new news. Its extent nearly covers the entire state.  On March 24, join us online or at one of five broadcast sites as Brian Schwingle from the MN Department of Natural Resources talks about these two diseases and how to differentiate them. Click here for more info.
It's March: here's what's happening in your woods
Itasca County Extension Educator Julie Miedtke provides a monthly calendar of things to look for and enjoy in Minnesota's woods. Click here to find out what's happening in Minnesota's woods this month.
Minnesota's forest management guidelines: new pocket field guide available
Do you work in the woods? The Minnesota Forest Resources Council recently published a condensed version of their forest management guidelines. This version is a user-friendly pocket field guide that summarizes the guidelines in a concise format that includes picture examples, useful tips, and a compilation of online resources. Click here to download the pocket field guide.
Northern Minnesota phenology: groundhogs
March brings the first groundhogs up from their slumbers. The growing season is roughly 120 days in northern Minnesota, so the groundhog will soon be chucking a lot of wood in a very short period of time. Click here to read this month's phenology post from John Latimer.
An update on forest insects, diseases, and invasives
A new Forest Insect and Disease Newsletter from the Department of Natural Resources is out. In the recent February issue, read about the PlayCleanGo program for halting the spread of invasive species, an update on quarantined forest pests, and a project looking at detecting buckthorn across Minnesota. Read it here.
It's maple syrup season!
It is generally agreed that Minnesota's maples are an "untapped" resource. Click here (PDF) to view our maple syrup fact sheet, including information on how to harvest maple sap, the tools needed, and how to store, prepare, and process the sap. For more non-timber forest products to harvest this spring, obtain a copy of the Minnesota Harvester Handbook.
