Notes and tips for woodland stewardship in Minnesota's forests

Tree genetics and silviculture: Join us online June 23
In today's forest management, genetics is more applicable than ever before. Dr. Carrie Pike from the University of Minnesota Tree Improvement Cooperative will discuss three things: 1) how genetic diversity can improve predictions of forest growth, 2) how seed transfer, variation in species responses, and silviculture affect the evolution of forest ecosystems, and 3) how improved seed can be deployed with the greatest effectiveness. Summer is the season of birch bark
Summer is a special season as many people head into the woods to harvest birch bark. Birch bark, or wiigwaas , is a keystone species for the Anishinaabe (Ojibwa or Chippewa), and is used by many cultures across the native range of birch.  Click here to read more about birch bark from the Minnesota Harvester Handbook.
Research report: Perceptions of emerald ash borer management
How does the public view strategies for managing emerald ash borer in Minnesota? Recent research has been completed that seeks to understand the  social implications of EAB management  Click here to read more about this research conducted by Alex Schlueter, a recent graduate from the natural resources sciences and management program at the University of Minnesota.
Oak wilt in Minnesota: High risk period
As of March 30, the state of Minnesota remains in a high risk period for oak wilt. We recommend avoiding pruning or wounding oaks until midsummer to reduce the risk of a new oak wilt outbreak. Next update is expected July 1, 2015. Read more about oak wilt here.
What's wrong with my silver maple?
Foresters are seeing many silver maples and some elms with stunted or no leaves and an abundance of seeds this spring. These trees are not dead and will rebound over the next couple of years. These conditions happen periodically with elms, maples, ashes and oaks. Click here to read more.
It's June: Here's what's happening in your woods
Itasca County Extension Educator Julie Miedtke provides a monthly calendar of things to look for and enjoy in Minnesota's woods. Click here to find out what's in your woods in June, including the emergence of emerald ash borer insects, loon chicks, and forest tent caterpillars.
Meet a forest steward: Jack Rajala

From logging to owning a mill and managing forests, there's hardly anything that Jack Rajala hasn't done in Minnesota's forests. As a tribute to his lifelong work, three million pine and spruce trees will be planted along the North Shore in honor of his legacy. Click here to read more from the Duluth News Tribune.
