Ochsner plans free-standing emergency rooms in Mid-City, West Bank
By: CityBusiness staff reports April 11, 2016 0
Ochsner Health System plans to open two free-standing emergency rooms - one in Mid-City and the other in Marrero - by the end of the year.
A 9,022-square-foot location will be built at the corner of Canal Street and South Carrolton Avenue where the former Sofas & Chairs Furniture store was located. The Marrero site will offer 8,452 square feet at 4837 Lapalco Blvd. Both will offer 24-hour access to care.
Both will have nine beds each and will offer a complete array of diagnostic technology such as a CT scanner, ultrasound and digital X-rays as well as an on-site laboratory. The facilities are expected to create a total of 60 to 80 full-time jobs between the two locations.
The two centers are from a partnership Ochsner formed with Texas-based Adeptus Health Inc. in September in an effort to bring these facilities to the New Orleans area.
A statement from Ochsner said the two parties will announce additional locations later this year.

Fresh & Local
There's squash at market and our culinary imaginations are fast at work. Chilled squash soup. Fire-roasted squash skewers. Squash lasagna. As we embrace the flavors of Spring, we remind ourselves that the key to any good recipe is quality ingredients. If the above ideas sound like a bit much to bite off, try this week's recipe for a simple take on squash's toothsome taste.

Pick of the Week: Kale!
Kale, don't go! Some of our vendors have either picked the last of their hardy greens or plowed them back into the earth. It's sad to watch our favorite crops go out of season, but you should get excited for new farm fresh arrivals in the coming weeks. And be sure to have one last night of romance with your favorite fleeting crop.

Tuesday's Green Plate Special
We have the distinct pleasure of hosting Baru at every Tuesday market in April. They'll be serving a variety of scrumptious Latin Caribbean tapas that satisfy your desire for fresh, adventurous cuisine. Chef Edgar loves choosing market fresh ingredients to incorporate into his playful recipes that we know you'll love!

Recipe of the Week:
Squash From the Field
You've had a long day. You deserve to kick your legs up and let the squash do the work. Be sure to select the freshest, most vibrant squash from this week's farmers market and get it in the kitchen ASAP.

 Squash From the Field
You've had a long day. You deserve to kick your legs up and let the squash do the work. Be sure to select the freshest, most vibrant squash from this week's farmers market and get it in the kitchen ASAP.
Ingredients
  • Yellow squash (3)
  • Garlic (4 cloves)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Olive Oil
Directions
Turn the oven on to 425. While it preheats, cut the squash down the middle lengthwise. Take your time to evenly slice half moon pieces ¼" thick. Even slices means uniform flavor and texture. This size manages to sop-up enough oil to enhance the flavor while still crisping up in the hot oven, avoiding soggy bites. Place the slices in a bowl with enough olive oil to cover. Season with salt and plenty of fresh-cracked black pepper. Add lots of chopped garlic (minced will burn) and get to mixing! Bake for 8 minutes and check for tenderness. Then crank the broiler up to high to get that satisfying crispy finish. Keep a close eye on them, because they'll go from delectable to burnt real quick! Serve topped with fresh lemon juice

Picture an incredible glowing dragon 192-feet long, a four-story, lit-from-within pagoda towering high enough to be seen from almost any vantage and dozens of dazzlingly colorful lighted displays created by a team of some 100 artisans and technical staff from Sichuan Tianyu, located in Zigong, China.
These beautiful objects have been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people in Europe, most recently in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and, and in the United states first in Spokane, Washington and now in New Orleans.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TO HOLD ONLINE TAX CERTIFICATE SALE BEGINNING TOMORROW
Over 3,900 properties available for purchase during three-day auction, April 12 - 14

NEW ORLEANS - The City announced that it will hold an online tax certificate sale as part of its continuing efforts to collect delinquent real estate taxes. The online auction will take place beginning tomorrow, April 12 and ending Thursday, April 14, 2016.

Over 3,900 properties are scheduled to go on sale in the auction, which is open to the general public. Free registration and a list of available properties are available  at CivicSource.com.

"As we continue our aggressive tax collection, we are working to recover taxpayer dollars through every means available to us," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "We're committed to collecting the revenues that we are owed and getting these properties back on the tax rolls. The success of previous annual sales should attract even more investors and give potential bidders confidence in the process."

A tax certificate sale is the sale of properties that have delinquent taxes due. Investors purchase the tax sale certificate by paying the amount of outstanding delinquent taxes and other statutory impositions. Property owners have a 3-year redemptive window in which to pay the investor the delinquent amount, an immediate five percent penalty plus an additional one percent for every month since the filing of the tax certificate.

Winning bidders of the tax sale are expected to pay for their purchases within 48 hours of the close of the auction. Payments must be made in one installment and all sales are final. However, winning bidders do not immediately own the property. The property owner can redeem the property by repaying the purchaser plus penalties and interest. If the property is not redeemed within three years (or 18 months for blighted properties), the tax title holder can pursue the property's title.

This auction can be viewed on www.CivicSource.com. Using the search options, prospective bidders can set the parameters for any property that falls within their interests and budget.

Individuals without immediate access to a computer can participate in the auction via kiosks that will be set up on the first floor of City Hall during normal business hours on auction days.

For property owners who would like to make a payment to remove their property from the sale, please visit the Treasury Bureau on the first floor of City Hall on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. before or during the tax sale period. Only cash, cashier's checks or official checks will be accepted.

For questions or assistance, prospective bidders should call Civic Source at 1- 888-387-8033 or email  [email protected] .

ABOUT THE BOOK
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic. But theLusitania was one of the era's great transatlantic "Greyhounds"-the fastest liner then in service-and her captain, William Thomas Turner, placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that for a century had kept civilian ships safe from attack.
Germany, however, was determined to change the rules of the game, and Walther Schwieger, the captain of Unterseeboot-20, was happy to oblige. Meanwhile, an ultra-secret British intelligence unit tracked Schwieger's U-boat, but told no one. As U-20 and the Lusitania made their way toward Liverpool, an array of forces both grand and achingly small-hubris, a chance fog, a closely guarded secret, and more-all converged to produce one of the great disasters of history.
It is a story that many of us think we know but don't, and Erik Larson tells it thrillingly, switching between hunter and hunted while painting a larger portrait of America at the height of the Progressive Era. Full of glamour and suspense, Dead Wake brings to life a cast of evocative characters, from famed Boston bookseller Charles Lauriat to pioneering female architect Theodate Pope to President Woodrow Wilson, a man lost to grief, dreading the widening war but also captivated by the prospect of new love.
Gripping and important, Dead Wake captures the sheer drama and emotional power of a disaster whose intimate details and true meaning have long been obscured by history.

ERIK LARSON is the author of four national bestsellers: In the Garden of Beasts, Thunderstruck, The Devil in the White City, and Isaac's Storm, which have collectively sold more than 5.5 million copies. His books have been published in fourteen countries.

American children's author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola, said, "Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." What better way to instill a love of reading to a child than to read to them everyday.
St. Bernard Parish library strives to bring reading alive to children through interactive storytelling. "Tales on Tuesdays" will return this winter and spring , and will run through May 3 at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. The program takes place at the Chalmette branch at 2600 Palmisano Blvd.
The earlier program is geared for younger listeners. The evening session is open to children of all ages, but will target school-aged children. This program is free and sessions run about 45 minutes. "Tales on Tuesdays" is intended to introduce children to literature through storybooks, poetry, flannel boards, finger plays, and participatory activities.

The Spring 2016 Jazz @ the Sandbar series continues as follows:
Kermit Ruffins at Wednesday's Sandbar
Kermit Ruffins,  4/13/, 7pm

This Wednesday, April 13, Jazz @ the Sandbar welcomes trumpeter and New Orleans celebrity Kermit Ruffins. Ruffins  will play with UNO student combos led by Matt Perrine and Ed Petersen.

It takes all of 30 seconds. Whether listening to a track on his newest CD, engaging him in conversation or hearing his voice on an answering machine message, one word springs immediately to mind to describe Kermit Ruffins. Passion.

The 44-year-old New Orleans native lives it, plays it and sings about it, and nowhere is it more evident than when he discusses his craft, the swinging, good-time jazz that lured him in as a teenager and continues to whet his appetite even three decades and ten solo recordings later.

"You definitely pick that up from me. That's definitely the way I live, man," he said. "From the time I wake up in the morning, I'm itching for my next show to happen. It can't get here fast enough for me. I think that's the basic ingredient of New Orleans music. Our traditional music. It's really just happy music. A lot of other jazz players are very technical and concentrating on studying hard. We study hard, too, but what we most want to do is just get up there and experiment with the tunes that we've been playing for years and years."

At this point in his career, in fact, having fun at work is a prerequisite.

"That's really the only way I can do it anymore," Ruffins said. "I do occasionally play a straight-ahead gig like a business meeting or a private party once in a while, where all they're asking me for is background music, but I'd rather get people up and dancing than just having dinner and listening. I'd rather be in one of the New Orleans clubs, and I'll only take gigs in places that have a dance floor. There are places around the city that I played for years, but now I won't do it because nobody's dancing."

The mandate for fun in performing traces back to a musical role model, Louis Armstrong. Though he grew up in a decade when Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna were at the top of late-teen playlists, Ruffins still vividly and emotionally recalls the moment when Armstrong, a New Orleans icon, became the be-all and end-all of his musical universe.

Ruffins' legacy-in-progress includes co-founding the Rebirth Brass Band in 1983. Rebirth's creation was inspired by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, which was credited with bringing influences of funk and contemporary bebop into New Orleans style brass bands. In 1992, he founded the Barbecue Swingers, a traditional jazz quintet that mixes music with another of his true loves, food. That combination helped create his first release for Basin Street Records' The Barbecue Swingers Live recorded at Tipitina's in New Orleans on Nov. 14, 1997.

And now, hundreds of shows and barbecues later, prolonging the status of jazz in New Orleans is among Ruffins' pet projects. He consistently plays at venues that cater to the younger set and is often visible in the audience at local sporting events and other activities where some of the city's youth are performing. "You can go out on any given night and see 30 or 40 bands playing," he said. "All over the city, whether it's at the schools or somewhere else, kids are still excited about this kind of music because it's the tradition that's been handed down and it's what they've been listening to for years."

Next Week's Jazz @ the Sandbar Welcomes Henry Butler
Henry Butler, 4/20, 7pm

Next Wednesday, April 20, Jazz @ the Sandbar welcomes pianist Henry Butler. Butler will play with two UNO ensembles, the Composers' Forum and the Self Actualizers, both directed by Brian Seeger.

A rich amalgam of jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, blues, and R&B, the music of Henry Butler is as excitingly eclectic as that of his New Orleans birthplace. Blinded by glaucoma at birth, Butler has been playing the piano since he was six years old, and arranging, composing, and performing professionally since he was twelve.

Considered one of the premier exponents of the great New Orleans jazz and blues piano tradition, Butler's sound has been influenced by his colorful surroundings. He grew up in the Calliope Projects in New Orleans, has traveled the world, and has lived on both coasts and in America's heartland. He studied with such greats as Alvin Batiste, Sir Roland Hanna, Professor Longhair, and James Booker, among others. He attended the Louisiana School for the Blind, Southern University, Baton Rouge, and Michigan State University. He has always had a willingness to explore new boundaries and to take risks.

To date, Butler has played almost every major club and festival in the United States, as well as venues in Brazil, France, Norway, Italy, Japan, and Australia. For over forty years he has conducted workshops, clinics, and master classes throughout the country. He also developed a camp for blind and visually impaired teen musicians, the subject of a 2010 documentary, The Music's Gonna Get You Through.

The most recent of his many CDs is Viper's Drag (with Butler, Bernstein & The Hot 9) on Impulse! It follows PiaNOLA Live, his first recording after Hurricane Katrina which decimated his home and took his piano, Braille scores, and all of his recording equipment. Butler can also be heard on recordings by other musicians, including Cyndi Lauper, Jeff Golub, and Odetta, and on the 2012 release of Treme, Season 2: Music from the Original HBO Series.

For more information on Butler, visit his website at www.henrybutler.com.

In our 14 years of promoting good natured hilarity, we have featured some of the top political, business, comedic, media and entertainment talent in Louisiana.  I am honored to host Politics with a Punch, an event which has attracted sell-out crowds for the past several years.

Thanks again for your support of Politics with a Punch. Without you and other friends, we could not have such successful events each and every month.

Hope to see you Thursday night at the fabulous EIFFEL SOCIETY!

House of Swing: Portrait of the First Family of Jazz
Ellis Marsalis' musical dynasty-a father and four sons that swing like no other-inhabits an allegorical house in this brilliant portrait of the first family of jazz that doubles as a loving portrait of the Crescent City's beauty and grace. Graphic master Paul Rogers' companion piece to his classic 2002 Jazz Fest portrait of Wynton Marsalis is a further exploration of his unique "soulful precision" style.

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

Sincerely,

Frank Stansbury
