April 11, 2016

April 10-16 is National Library Week - a week to honor how libraries transform lives every day. Celebrate by checking out a book! (Or by attending a free tech workshop, an English class, story time, the museum. . . . The Community Library offers more than 120,000 items in our collection, and an infinite number of experiences!)
English as a Second Language Class
Tuesdays, 6:00 p.m., Lecture Hall

Adults can study English as a Second Language in these free community classes through April 12. The classes are taught by Janet Ross-Heiner, M.A., and Karen Little, M.A. After a brief hiatus, a new session will begin in May.

Wednesday, April 13, 6:00 p.m., Lecture Hall

The technology we integrate into our lives presents great opportunities but also risks.
In this class we will go over new steps you can take to be safe online so that you can protect your identity, your finances, your passwords and yourself.

Library opens at 3 p.m. on Friday

The library will open at 3:00 p.m., this Friday, the 15th, following a staff development program.

The Idaho Humanities Council presents  Douglas Brinkley at The Community Library on Friday, May 6. A professor of history at Rice University, Brinkley is  one of the most distinguished historians of our time. He is the author, co-author, and editor of more than two dozen books exploring American history and literature, the American presidency, and contemporary culture. In his most recent book,  Rightful Heritage: Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Land of America , Brinkley turns his attention to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, chronicling the 32nd President's essential yet unsung legacy as the founder of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and premier protector of America's public lands. The book focuses on some of the important work done by the CCC in Idaho.

April is National Poetry Month! This week Carter Hedberg, director of philanthropy, recommends, "The Wild Rose" by Wendell Berry. The poem can be found in Berry's  New Collected Poems at The Community Library.

Sometimes hidden from me
in daily custom and in trust,
so that I live by you unaware
as by the beating of my heart,

Suddenly you flare in my sight,
a wild rose looming at the edge
of thicket, grace and light
where yesterday was only shade,

and once again I am blessed, choosing
again what I chose before.
