Recently baseball's cover boy and enfant terrible Bryce Harper had this to say about the national pastime: "Baseball's tired. It's a tired sport because you can't express yourself. You can't do what people in other sports do." I guess that's why Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Marvin Gaye and Lady Gaga never made it out of A ball.
Harper created a heated debate for the new season between pitchers and catchers, traditionalists and trendies, lords of the game from yesterday, today and the future. The national pastime now competes with more sports than ever, with fans having less time to enjoy them.
The NBA has turned a team sport into the American Idol of individual expression. NBA All-Star weekend, exemplified by the slam-dunk competition, is to the basketball world a laboratory of coolness and in-your-face communication.
Even the stodgy NHL now has a super skills competition during All-Star festivities where the speed and power of the skaters are brought into clear focus, underscoring how cool these armored icemen can be.
Of course you knew that Major League Baseball's Home Run Derby debuted in 1985 as part of the All-Star Game in Minneapolis. The Orioles ironman Cal Ripken was the first long-ball champion.
In 1987 the Oakland A's, working with Major League Baseball, took an aggressive approach and created a stand-alone baseball-skills competition the day before the All-Star Game at the Coliseum.
The AL and NL went head to head. Think of it as pitch, hit and run on steroids ... on second thought, scratch that steroid reference!
Fans of their favorite stars were treated to hitting for accuracy, with targets placed on the field. Winner was the Boston Red Sox batmaster Wade Boggs. Relay throw from outfielder to infielder to catcher. I have no clue who won. The home run derby was won by the Cubs' Andre Dawson.
The event was sponsored by Chevrolet, and the tickets were priced for families at $5 each. Few will remember, but the proceeds were donated to the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. It was one of the largest single donations (around $200,000) in the history of the BASHOF, which purchases athletic equipment for local youth sports organizations.
It's time for a new competition for All-Star weekend.
I believe we should heed Harper, Big Papi, Jose Bautista, Manny Machado or any number of gesticulating pitchers and get on with it. Here is a possible format of a Millennial skills competition that could liven up baseball.
Bat flipping
This popular activity will consist of a batter going yard off his selected batting practice pitcher and hurling his shattered ash bat into the air. Points are awarded for hang time and artistic expression. Thirty bonus points if a broken bat sticks in the ground.Sponsored by Louisville Slugger.
Speed pitch: First to 100 mph wins
The video board shows the speed pitch readout in 10-foot-tall lights flashing "100 MPH."
The pitching rosters of both teams each have three pitches to break the century mark or unravel their rotator cuff. The top three hurlers then try to see who has the real gas, cheese, dead red, hummer, heater or laser. Top gun speed wins. Sponsored by the local sports orthopedic clinic, oil company or Kraft.
Pitcher face and finger pointing
Home run derby winners from the past few years face the most obnoxious hurlers. Batters aren't allowed to swing, and after the third strike, pitchers will be judged on facial expressions, finger pointing, dance moves and choreographed walks to the dugout. Sponsored by America's Got Talent.
Manager meltdown
This one is dedicated to Billy Martin, Lou Piniella and Earl Weaver. Three managers who have been ejected the most, leading up to the All-Star game. will be pitted against the umpires who have thumbed the most players and managers from the previous season.
They will be timed in a 60-second face-off. Scoring will be based on most four-letter words, amount of face-to-face spittle, spastic gestures, chest bumps, base throwing and dirt kicking. Sponsored by any local law firm or bail bondsman.
Home-to-first sprint
Think of the 40 at the NFL combine. Players are split into two teams of three from each side of the plate. At the crack of the bat, players take off in a full sprint. Whoever blows out his hammy is the loser. Sponsored by Sprint.
Foul-ball catching holding baby in one arm (upper deck)
We have seen this all too often: a drunken dad holding a brewski in one hand, his baby in the other, trying to catch a foul ball without dropping his valuable offspring or spilling his brew. The winning dad (who holds on to both) receives kegs for life and a smack upside his head from a Louisville Slugger swung by the wife. Sponsored by Pampers, the local child-protection agency and Upper Deck baseball cards.
I can just see the rollout of a new MLB public-service campaign: "Hello, I'm Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals and I'm here to Take the Tired out of Baseball and make Major League Baseball Great Again!"
Play ball.

A highly anticipated season, both on and off the field, awaits this summer as the San Jose Giants, Class A Advanced Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, look to challenge for another California League championship. A roster filled with top San Francisco Giants prospects and a bevy of exciting promotions at Municipal Stadium, including giveaways, firework shows and theme nights, highlight the 2016 slate.
Lipso Nava will manage the San Jose Giants this season after spending the previous three years as the club's hitting coach. He also served as San Jose's acting manager during the final month of the 2015 season, leading the Giants to the North Division championship. Last year marked San Jose's 12th consecutive winning season - a California League record.
The San Jose Giants are expected to field one of the most talented starting rotations in the California League this year. Up-and-coming hurlers Sam Coonrod and Andrew Suarez will likely take on leading roles for the Giants pitching staff in 2016. Coonrod, one of the hardest throwers in the system, was rated the top pitching prospect in the Class A South Atlantic League last season while pitching for Augusta. Meanwhile, Suarez was San Francisco's second round draft pick a year ago after an outstanding collegiate care
er at the University of Miami. Both pitchers joined San Jose late last season and played leading roles during the playoffs as the Giants advanced to the Championship Series.
Offensively, catcher Aramis Garcia is expected to anchor the San Jose lineup. Considered the top catching prospect in the San Francisco farm system, Garcia is a former second round draft pick and is coming off a season in which he connected for 15 home runs. First baseman Chris Shaw, who was drafted in the first round last year, will also look to make an impact in San Jose this season. Last summer while playing for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, Shaw hit a Northwest League leading 12 home runs.
Fans will have the opportunity to see the sky light up at Municipal Stadium with 15 spectacular postgame fireworks shows, including Opening Night (April 7), Independence Day and a Friday night fireworks series. Be sure to catch Giants baseball action on television this season as 31 games will be aired live throughout Northern California on Comcast Hometown Network (Channel 104 SD, Channel 819 HD).
