Aggie Days
What a fantastic day everyone had at Aggie Days! The students in grades 1-9 had an opportunity to see live animals, and view exhibits on how important agriculture is to Alberta. A lot of learning occurred along with a lot of fun too. Most of the exhibits were hands on so students could get right into the activities. The rodeo was very exciting with lots of cheering and some yahoos. Well done students!

We would like to thank the many volunteers who joined us for the trip (Mrs. Segal, Mrs. Linetsky, Mrs. Goldstein, Mrs. Wilms, Mrs. Babadjanov, and Ms. Azulai). Thank you so much!

Y Team Robotics Club from Yerucham Israel
This past Shabbat, our Shul and School community was privileged to host 10 High School Students and 3 adult leaders of the Y Team Robotics Club from Yerucham Israel. Yerucham is a tiny town in the Negev with a population of 10,000 people. The club accepts any high school age student who wants to be part of it regardless of academic ability or religious affiliation.  Over 40% of all Yerucham children are active in Robotics Clubs.

Because a few of the members are Shomer Shabbat, the entire team will not compete at any competition that is scheduled on Shabbat. Fortunately for us, the Western Canada Regional FIRST STRONGHOLD competition was scheduled during the week at the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary. An email was sent to Mrs. Marina Segal asking about hotels and Kosher food options for the team while they are in Calgary. This began a series of requests for host families for Shabbat accommodations for meals and lodging. We can be very proud that on short notice, many families in our House of Jacob community stepped forward to host. In was an inspiring Shabbat for all the families as well as for the shul members. The Y Team led a special Bnai Akiva program on Shabbat afternoon for our children even though they were exhausted from travelling and arriving right before Shabbat. They were very well received and invited our students to come visit them at the University during the competition.

Early Sunday morning, the group had an opportunity to visit Banff where they had fun throwing snowballs at each other and hiking to the lower falls at Johnston Canyon.  Because the time was getting late, they davened Schararit at the Lower Falls.

The team was so appreciative of the warm welcome as well as the encouragement and support from our community.

On Wednesday, students from Akiva together with Mr. Habot and Mr. Kostousov, our robotics club leaders left Aggie Days after lunch and took the C-Train to the University.  We were warmly welcomed by the Y Team and given safety goggles to enter the booth area. After visiting their booth and learning about their robot Hector, we went to watch the competition in the stadium. We were privileged to see the YTeam donned in Israeli flags, with some of the members wearing kippot, some with tzitzit flying enter a competition of teams from across North America as well as Mexico and Australia. We watched as they were victorious in the quarter finals and come close to winning in the semi-finals.

The highlight of the competition was the presentation of the Chairman's Award which is given to the team that applies Robotics Engineering principles into the wider community.  The Y-Team was selected for this prestigious Chairman's Award for their adaptation of ride-on cars for use by children with special needs. To date, they have modified 100 ride-on cars and adapted each one to the individual needs of a specific child. The Israeli team received a standing ovation from the other participants and spectators and were invited to compete in another Robotics Competition in St. Louis in three weeks. We are so proud of them and hope that we will meet again either in Israel or at a future competition in Calgary.
