The WRAP Up
Last week we certified 59 factories in 15 countries:
Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Egypt, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Lesotho, Malaysia, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
Garment exports from Bangladesh are on the rise despite lingering fears of extremist violence in the country. Export data from the country shows that apparel exports rose 14% year on year between October and January with sales to the United States alone jumping 16% for the period. This comes in spite of a series of deadly attacks against Westerners in the capital city of Dhaka. Analysts say that lower than average wages and a skilled workforce continue to work in the country's favor. (

Bangladesh's Prime Minister has announced the development of 10 new economic zones throughout the country. The announcement was made during a video conference at the Bangabandhu Conference Center, where Hasina noted that the government has long-term plans to set up 100 zones across the nation. She noted that the goal of this effort is to help generate jobs which will ultimately lead to alleviate poverty across the nation. (

Four alleged robbers were injured in a police shootout on February 26 as they attempted to flee a factory they had reportedly just robbed. Authorities say that one of the suspects had been hired on as a security guard just days earlier and was able to sedate the other security guards after feeding them cake laced with sedatives. The suspects are recovering in the hospital after which they are expected to face questioning and possible charges from police. (BD News 24)
Garment workers in Bangladesh submitted a memo to the country's Food Minister demanding a food rationing system and a government subsidy to help them cope with the rising price of food. The memo noted that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised to implement such a system during her election bid in 2009, but that early editions of the program turned out to be ineffective. Bangladesh's armed forces and law enforcement sectors currently enjoy a rationing system. (

A top government official in Bangladesh is urging foreign denim manufacturers to invest in the country. During a recent trade show in Dhaka, Gowher Rizvi, a top adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, noted that Bangladesh's denim sector has grown significantly in recent years and that the industry has a firm foundation for foreign investment success. Industry observers say that Bangladesh exports US$2 billion in denim products annually, a number that could grow to US$7 billion by 2021. (
