Alamo Colleges - Northwest Vista College Program Honored as Bright Spot in Hispanic Education
Members of the NVC College Connections team were recently honored at a reception recognizing the program as a Bright Spot
in Hispanic Education


The Alamo Colleges - Northwest Vista College (NVC) College Connections program was recently recognized by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics (Initiative) as a Bright Spot in Hispanic Education. The NVC College Connections staff were honored at a reception to recognize San Antonio leaders for their commitment to expanding and supporting educational outcomes and opportunities for Hispanics.

Members of the NVC College Connections team included Yolanda Reyes-Guevara, Ruth Prieto, Cathy Gonzalez and Shirley Pena.  The NVC team was congratulated at the reception by special guests Alejandra Ceja, executive director of the Initiative, and Jaqueline Cortez Wang, senior advisor.




Alamo Colleges - San Antonio College's Travis Early College High School Earns Double Recognition
Students and teachers at Alamo Colleges - San Antonio
College's Travis Early College High School were recently
recognized for their achievements.


Both students and teachers at Alamo Colleges - San Antonio College's (SAC) Travis Early College High School (TECHS) recently earned recognition for their accomplishments. The TECHS robotics team, comprised of 19 students, designed and built a robot to compete against 87 other teams, and were the only San Antonio school to advance to the upcoming Super Regional Championship for the FIRST Tech Challenge competition. 
In the championship, the TECHS team will compete against the best teams from the southeastern United States.

Also recognized was Cassandra Vara, a ninth-grade English language arts teacher at TECHS, who was named Distinguished Teacher of the Year by the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD). Nominated by her peers, Vara was selected from nearly 100 educators and honored during a celebration at the Alamo Convocation Center on Thursday, February 25.

TECHS is a public charter school, focused on preparing students for collegiate success. TECHS allows students from around Bexar County to take challenging high school and college courses that lead to a high school diploma and up to two years of college credit from SAC. 
The National Weather Services has designated the
Alamo Colleges as a national StormReady® site.

Alamo Colleges Earns National Recognition as StormReady ® Site

The Alamo Colleges has been recognized by the National Weather Service as a StormReady®  site. The StormReady ® program helps community leaders and residents better prepare for hazardous weather and flooding. StormReady® sites are committed to implementing the infrastructure and systems needed to save lives and protect property when severe weather strikes.

To earn this distinction, the Alamo Colleges has demonstrated its ability to track, measure and share important weather information with the community on a 24/7 basis and to test its system through emergency weather drills. The Alamo Colleges has deployed NOAA weather radios to all campuses, along with rain gauges, to allow each site real-time data for monitoring severe weather events.

"'Are we ready?' is the question that propels the Alamo Colleges' risk management department and personnel throughout our district to go the extra mile on emergency preparedness," said Diane Snyder, vice chancellor for finance and administration. "For that reason, our 5,000 employees and 55,000 on-campus students know they can rely on early and frequent notifications as well as reliable plans to ensure their safety when an emergency arises."
