Coming of Age, Whether They Like It or Not

Shortly before my son's bar mitzvah last fall, I purchased some Arnold Palmer lemonade/iced tea in what we call "the Man Jug." It was part of a ritual created by my older son, Charlie, when he came home from his bar mitzvah service, chug-a-lugged the tea straight from the bottle, and proclaimed, "I'm a man, I can drink from the Man Jug." His little brother, Theo, wasn't going to miss this opportunity for himself.
As I went through the long process of preparing for my second child's bar mitzvah, I regularly wondered why we were doing this. Why did we choose to take on the work, the stress, and the cost? Parenting a 'tween, let alone a 'tween and his older brother, is work enough. Why add a significant responsibility when we didn't have to? Why force my son to do something he'd be very happy to skip?
My kids started Hebrew school in kindergarten, going once, and then later, twice a week. They almost always complained. Even though their Jewish education was more fun and less daunting than mine, they still complained. It's not hard to understand. What kid wants to stop what he's doing on Sunday afternoon to go to two hours of school?
With Theo, the bar mitzvah was a hard sell, and he was quite vocal in his opposition. We didn't back down - my instincts told me that it was important that he go through this process - but I was often tempted. As much as he kvetched, he knew he wasn't getting out of it.

I was praised as being a "real
baleboosteh" as a young girl because I liked to bake and cook, and I understood that beyond tasting delicious, it was all about the presentation (e.g., carrot florets and sprigs of parsley on salads). But the first time I made butter cookies, I couldn't understand why they weren't browning, and I overbaked them until they were rock hard. My dad enthusiastically picked up what was then an impenetrable cookie-turned-teething-biscuit and said, "Just like my mother used to make!"
These days, I still enjoy cooking and baking, especially for a fun gathering of friends and family. Though I admit I don't know a screen pass from a screen door, or a tight-end from a tightwad, I do know that the countdown to Super Bowl 50 means it's time to start planning your game day menu! Ditch the same old, same old: This internationally spiced Jewish menu makes the meal a game changer.
