Architectural expansion of museums has become a favorite topic with arts journalists over the last few decades, as has their focus on collectors and dealers who fuel the ever more powerful art market. At the same time museums themselves are adapting to new technology and changing demographics, driven as they are by shifting audience interests and new funding challenges. These topics are constant in our time and an understandable interest of many.
While the art world is constantly changing in these and other ways, museums usually oversee their permanent collections as they have in years past in spite of the cry for a freer exchange of art and artifacts at a time when "ownership" and "patrimony" have taken on new meaning. Can this situation change? Should this situation change?
About the speaker: Michael Conforti received his M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. An expert in sculpture, decorative arts and design, as well as the history of museums and collecting, he was Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (1977-80) and Chief Curator at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (1980-94) before joining the Clark Art Institute in 1994 as Director. He has served as a trustee of the Amon Carter Museum, MASS MoCA, the American Academy in Rome, and AAM/ICOM (the A
merican Association of Museums' International Committee on Museums). He is a member of CIHA (the Comité International d'histoire de l'art), the National Committee for the History of Art, and is a past President of the Board of the Association of Art Museum Directors. After 21 years, he retired at the end of August 2015 as Director of the Clark. He continues teaching at Williams College in the Graduate Program of the History of Art.
The Soane Foundation expresses sincere gratitude to the ISAW for hosting our event and providing technical assistance for the presentation of our evening.

THE SAMUEL C. MILLER MEMORIAL LECTURE
A TRIBUTE TO A
CONSUMMATE MUSEUM DIREDCTOR,
STEADFAST FRIEND, ENTHUSIASTIC MENTOR,
AND LOVER OF OPERA AND TRAVEL
This lecture is being presented by Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation in tribute to Samuel C. Miller. Sam served as director of The Newark Museum for twenty-five years, during which he spearheaded the nationally acclaimed Master Plan renovation and expansion, designed by Michael Graves, employing many distinctive and recognizable Soanian influences. Having been introduced to the museum in London, he became an admirer of Sir John Soane, so much so that when he became aware of the startup of Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation in New York, he embraced it wholeheartedly, both financially and with sound advice about life in the not-for-profit world. He served as a founding director and later director emeritus. |
