Yvonne Vissing, Ph.D. and Christopher Moore-Vissing, authors of "Going Gluten Free : A guide to healthy living, dining and cooking" will be speaking at the Dover Public Library about living a gluten free life on Monday August 10th at 7pm. People who are curious about gluten and wonder if they have gluten intolerance, people with celiac disease, or those who live with a gluten-sensitive loved one will get some great information about gluten and its effect on our bodies. The authors will have copies of their book available for purchase and will sign copies. In addition, representatives from Hannaford's and Fiddlehead Farms will be bringing a variety of gluten free snacks and products for folks to sample.

Local Filmmakers Screen Film at Library

Tuesday, August 11 at 7pm in the Lecture Hall

Local filmmakers will be screening their short film "Through a Glass, Darkly" at the Dover Public Library on Tuesday August 11th at 7pm, followed by a Q&A session with cast and crew members. The story follows 15-year-old Julia who, while on vacation at the beach with her older sister, sells her soul to the devil for the magic of the boardwalk. This film is produced by Dover Independent Players and was filmed in July mainly at Hampton Beach. The film runs about 15 minutes and is appropriate for teens and adults. Keep in mind when considering bringing younger members of the family that the "rating" would be PG-13. You can find updates and behind the scenes videos and photos at Facebook.com/TAGDfilm or on Instagram with the hashtag #TAGDfilm. The Dover Independent Players are a group of former Dover High School students who congregate as colleagues and resources to produce art, music, films, and theater productions.

Game Night

Next Game Night is Wednesday, August 19 @ 6:00pm in the Lecture Hall.

Monthly Game Night continues in August on the 3rd Wednesday of the month which is August 19th at 6pm. The previous Game Nights have been a hit with over 25 people coming to play tabletop games at the Library with friends and neighbors. Folks met new people, enjoyed several games, and reluctantly left at closing. We have a few folks who have volunteered to help out with Game Nights and we could always use more. We'd like to use volunteers to assist staff and eventually make the program self-reliant without staff participation. Thank you also to volunteers who have helped people learn new games already.

Mini Maker Faire
Saturday, August 29th from 10-4 at the Children's Museum

The Library will have a booth at the 2nd annual Mini Maker Faire on Saturday August 29th from 10-4 at the Children's Museum and Henry Law Park in downtown Dover. Please stop by and see some of our resources for crafters and makers, and plan on taking about 15 minutes to craft a mini book pendant to take home! http://makerfairedover.com/

Download 2 Free Audiobooks Each Week

SYNC, a free summer audiobook program for young adults, wraps up on August 12th. SYNC will give away two complete audiobook downloads a week - a current young adult title along with a thematically paired classic or required summer reading title. The best part is they never expire! www.audiobooksync.com

Local Artist Exhibit in August and Presenter

Wednesday, August 12 at 7pm in the Lecture Hall

Monica Nagle is a blues, jazz and folk singer/songwriter, poet and fine artist from Buffalo, New York. She now calls Dover, New Hampshire home. Her latest endeavor is a CD/Book project "If You Had Heard My Voice", a collection of poetry, art, lyrics and prose meant to inspire and heal. She will be promoting her new book at the library on Wednesday August 12th at 7pm and will have copies for sale which she will sign. Although a prodigious songwriter, Nagle generally performs a carefully crafted mix of her own material and socially conscious standards. Her artwork will be on display during August.

This and That

Wanted:  Reading Glasses

The Circulation Desk used to have 4 pairs of reading glasses at the desk for patrons to borrow. Last month we had the bright idea to put them out on the desk. Now they have all walked away. If you have any spare pairs at home, please drop them off so that those who forget theirs can borrow and return a pair!

Friends Merchandise

The Friends have several items for sale to help fund their efforts at providing "extras" for the library. These items are on display under the awning that says "Friends of the Library" near the Adult Circulation desk. We recently spruced up the display and signage. These items make great souvenirs for visiting family or hostess gifts. The book bags are a great deal at only $15, and the cards featuring a line drawing of the library are very elegant for short notes.

Help Keep DVDs Clean

Did you know the library loans an average of 5,000 DVDs a month? That's a lot of DVD handling! If you come across a DVD that doesn't work, pay it forward by letting a staff member know either verbally, or with a post-it note, and we'll clean it so the next person will be able to enjoy it without skipping or stopping. Thank you for your help!
