    Supporting Families Experiencing Perinatal 
    Emotional Complications: A Training for 
    Birth, Lactation & Postpartum Professionals

This training will familiarize childbirth educators, doulas, lactation counselors nurses and other birth/postpartum professionals with the emotional complications of pregnancy and the postpartum year.

Continuing Education Credits: BACE/NMC: 3.5 contact hours; DONA credits have been applied for (also accepted by Lamaze and ICEA). Meets criteria of the ALPP for lactation counselor recertification 
credits. Meets criteria of the Comm. of MA  Board of Nursing regulations: (244 CMR, section 5:00) for continuing education for nursing re-licensure for 4.2 contact hours.

TRAINING AGENDA:

We will introduce the range, timing and prevalence of perinatal emotional complications; who is at risk; impacts on the mother, infant and family;
and the signs and symptoms of emotional complications in pregnancy and postpartum, while encouraging discussion about scope of practice, boundaries, and self-care.

Next we will introduce an accessible 2-question screening tool and examples of language to use with clients to identify and follow up on concerns about emotional complications.

Participants will break out into small groups to practice utilizing the screening tool and to develop their own language to talk about perinatal emotional complications within their work.

We will also present 3 case studies and facilitate small group discussions of the cases presented, which will include a birth trauma experience, postpartum home visit, and breastfeeding group scenario to allow the participants to integrate the information presented throughout the training.

The training will conclude with sharing Massachusetts-based resources that exist and a discussion about how to develop your own community-based network of resources and referrals.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Understand the risk factors, signs, and symptoms of perinatal emotional complications
  • Be able to use the PHQ-2 screening tool to assess women for perinatal emotional complications
  • Acquire experience exploring women's feelings and experiences to better identify possible emotional complications during pregnancy and postpartum
  • Recognize limits of scope of practice, understand when and know where and how to refer clients for additional support for perinatal emotional complications.
