Arbor Day Celebration
Tree-planting event returns Friday, April 29
Wichita Park & Recreation officials will host the 61st Annual Arbor Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 29 at Botanica, The Wichita Gardens, 701 Amidon Street. The celebration highlights the value trees provide to residents through a variety of educational activities and demonstrations.
"Trees are important to sustaining our quality of life," said Park & Recreation Director Troy Houtman. During the celebration, organizers will show tree planting techniques, share tree maintenance activities involving heavy forestry equipment, demonstrate tree climbing skills, and offer other educational activities. Students will also help plant a Willow Oak on Botanica grounds.
Organizations assisting with the event include Wichita's Project Beauty, Double Tree by Hilton at the Wichita Airport, Asplundh Tree Expert Co., Sedgwick County Extension Master Gardeners and Westar Energy.
"I'm excited that the City of Wichita and Westar Energy have joined efforts to improve Wichita's urban forest," said Don Sherman, Westar's Vice President of Customer and Community Relations.
Wichita Park & Recreation supports 130 parks, eight recreation centers, nine swimming pools, 52 athletic fields, five golf courses, six interactive fountains, numerous adult and youth-based activities and athletics programs and 2,407 acres of rights-of-way.
