Your Austin. Your Chamber.

We are thrilled to welcome 187 new businesses who joined the Chamber last week. That's due to the amazing support of hundreds of members and volunteers who participated in our membership campaign. They donated their time to share the benefits of Chamber membership. Investing in the Chamber enables us to grow our strong economy, strengthen our advocacy efforts on issues that matter most, and offer programming to meet the needs of all businesses. Austin Prop 1: Vote Yes, Vote No.  What it means.

Members have asked for a better understanding of the May 7 ballot language for Proposition 1. It has several implications for how Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) like Uber and Lyft will operate in Austin. Early voting is open from April 25 to May 3. Click here for voting details .

At the end of last year, the Austin City Council passed an ordinance requiring drivers who use ridesharing platforms to undergo fingerprint-based background checks - one among a suite of additional regulations. Since that ordinance went into effect, ridesharing companies have claimed that the additional rules pose an existential threat to their business model. A coalition of civic and business groups opposed to the new rules, through a grassroots petition process, collected enough signatures to bring the issue to a public referendum.

T his is your opportunity to decide on the regulations that govern TNCs. A YES vote on Prop 1, supported by ridesharing companies, repeals the current ordinance and replaces it with a set of guidelines that mimic the original law passed in October 2014. A NO vote will keep what the City currently has in place which mandates fingerprint-based background checks as well as other safety and t ransactional  practices for drivers.

Corporate Giving Up in Central Texas
