Pastor's Pen

Several years ago Rev. Ken Irby brought the idea of Wesley Discipleship Groups to University Methodist.  Four Wesley groups continue to meet.  They meet at different times and at different places. Each group has their own covenant. Some meet in people's homes but sometimes they meet for dinner or at the church in one of the classrooms. The size of the group varies, but each one has comfortably invited new people as space would allow. These small groups focus on mutual accountability and support for one another and are the "method" of Methodism.

Covenant Discipleship groups help Christians to grow in loving God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength and love their neighbor as themselves. They are a proven and effective way of growing in our discipleship and help the congregation live out its mission with Christ in the world.  Churches that develop small groups are stronger and more able to respond quickly to the changing needs in the community.   Many churches find their small group ministry is the backbone of their congregational life.

I have begun praying about what I perceive as the need for more small groups within University Methodist. I will be gathering a small cadre of folks together very soon to discuss the possibility of creating new covenant groups for a new generation of believers.  I invite you to join me in praying for the creation of new covenant groups to fulfill this need; for new leadership to emerge and be trained; and for a rebirth of enthusiasm for this essential Methodist way of "doing church."

In God's grace,
Dr. Jane

Tunica Hills Hiking
Sunday, April 24th @ Noon

Do you like hiking, cross country, hillwalking, rambling, and just being out in nature? The University UMC Young Adults are going on a group hike to Tunica Hills (also known as Clark Creek Nature Area) on Sunday, April 24, after the 11 a.m. service. We will crash the free college lunch that day, so we don't have to worry about lunch. As soon as lunch is over (around 12:45 p.m.), we'll carpool to Clark Creek. The drive takes a little over an hour. Suggested items to wear/bring: athletic clothes that dry quickly, hiking sandals or athletic shoes that you don't mind getting wet and muddy, towel, sunscreen, bug spray, snacks , and water. Did I mention there are WATERFALLS? Hope to see you there!

Bereavement Ministry Needs

Dear Friends in Ministry,

We are pleased to announce the formation of a new committee to set up and plan receptions for those members who have funerals at UUMC.  Jan Daly and Chris Enright,  who are very able organizers, have agreed to co-coordinate this committee.  They are seeking all individuals who are willing to volunteer for the following needs.

1. Donate a food item when there is a funeral reception planned at the church. This might be a plate of deviled eggs or a dozen sandwiches or a cake, etc. The food would need to be brought to the Fellowship Hall on the day of the funeral.  Fifteen or twenty volunteers would be most appreciated. The idea is that with sufficient volunteers there could be a rotation so that each person need only serve two or three times a year.

      OR

2. Set-up the Fellowship Hall before the funeral with tables, chairs, and food service plus clean-up the tables after the reception. Ten volunteers would be most appreciated. Again, if there are sufficient volunteers then the receptions could be rotated among them.

This is a powerful ministry to grieving families who benefit deeply from the outpouring of Christ's love from their church family on the day of the funeral.

Please contact Chris Enright at 225-769-3486; or Jan Daly at 225-766-1566 to volunteer.

The Children of our church need YOU!

UUMC is looking for volunteers to help with Children's Sunday School in May! We need a total of 4 volunteers each Sunday. Remember, the children of our church are the PRESENT of our church. And without them, we have no future. Please prayerfully consider giving of a Sunday or two in the next few months. You don't have to a parent to volunteer - just have a willing heart to give and time on a Sunday morning! The lessons and supplies are provided to you and the curriculum is easy to follow. Don't think you can do this? Don't worry - anyone can! Please use the link below to sign up on our online sign up sheet. If you are unable to sign up online you can also do so in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday.

If you have any questions please contact Shirley Flake, [email protected], who has graciously volunteered her time to help coordinate this effort.

a Thank you from our Senior Minister!

Generosity of spirit is a wonder to behold.  Following the Kenyan Mission Team fundraiser, Colleen and I were amazed by the additional gifts that continued to come into the office.  Because of everyone's gracious support, we raised $2,424.30 for our work at the Hope for Orphans Rescue and Education Centre and the Spring Valley Baptist School in Nairobi, Kenya.  We really appreciate all your help and so will the children we work with this summer.
